Best Summer Movies 2010

What do you consider to be the best summer movies of 2010? I LOVED 'Inception' and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I also really liked Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (which is still playing at the Embarcadero theater). What were your Top 3 this summer?

Believe it or not, Inception is the only one I've seen, and I did enjoy it. However, I went when I was overtired, which I don't recommend because it is hard enough to follow even when you are fully awake. I would love to see it again and put it all together.

I would love to see Charlie St. Cloud, and I can't WAIT for Eat Pray Love to come out. Hopefully the film does the book justice.

I'm looking forward to Dinner with Schmucks! That looks hilarious. I've been watching a lot of movies at home this summer--been working my way through Dexter and I'm trying to get into Mad Men but so far its a snooze fest.

What is Charlie St. Cloud?

I haven't been to a movie in a couple of years. I really like Julia Roberts in interviews, but I have found her movies to be a little hit or miss.

It has been a Mad Men summer for me too, although I really enjoy it--I love shows where you see people striving in work situations. I don't know why.

I have also been watching Friday Night Lights on NBC which is a cliched but which I also enjoy--mainly for the relationship between the married couple at the center of it all.

But this is more than a little off topic.

Charlie St. Cloud is the movie with Zac Efron and the brother who passes away and plays baseball with him. I think I just dated myself.

The Eat Pray Love excitement comes more from the fact that I loved the book - I'm actually on the fence about her casting (although I do like her).

Charlie St. Cloud sounds a little bit like Field of Dreams (which probably means I've dated myself). We middle aged types know who Zac Effron is. He's that young singin' whipper-snapper in those Highschool movies--although for me they might as well ahve been called Highschool Nap Time 1, 2 and 3 given my reaction to musicals.

@FlowerGirl - MadMen gets better. Give it 3 or 4 episodes.

Charlie St. Cloud looks like a tear jerker movie. Eat Pray Love, I didn't love the book so I'm not going to see the movie but it does look like there are a ton of people who are looking forward to it.The book had a huge following.

I want to see The Other Guys (Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg) - that looks hilarious and Scott Pilgrim vs The World with Michael Cera (Juno).

Going to see Eat Pray Love tonight - I'll let you all know how it is (@Tracypie - I LOVED the book and can't believe you didn't like it, but I know it is not for everyone but I'll let it slide :) ) I only wish I were seeing it at one of the cool theaters that was mentioned in a different thread...

I went to see a couple of flicks this week to make up for being stuck around here and not able to make it over to the city to see some music. Here are my recomendations.

Don't bother with The Other Guys--typical Will Ferrell funny for about 45 minutes then you wish you had drank more before going to see it. Wait for it to come on video.

Scott Pilgrim is hella cool--kinda reminded me of when I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time. But I love Michael Sera.

I still want to see Dinner with Schmucks--couldn't find anyone who was into it.

And I'm not sure about Eat Prey Love. I like Julia Roberts but I don't like going to a movie when I haven't read the book--(it kinda ruins the book for me). My mom read the book and she liked about half of it but thought the end was "trite," I think was her word for it. But mom's really picky when it comes to books, so I take that as fairly high praise. I will have to try to dig up her copy.

Okay, my evaluation on Eat Pray Love is that it is most definitely NOT as good as the book (the good news is that this is not the first time that this has happened in cinematic history, so I went in with expectations as such). The book is fun, witty, and somewhat whimsical...and Julia Roberts just doesn't quite fit the bill. Many of the significant details of the book were included in the film, but appeared insignificant to the movie plot and seemed to be there only to do due diligence to the written memoir. I enjoyed seeing Hollywood's attempt at bringing one of my favorite books to life, but cannot imagine seeing it without having read the book first.

@Flowergirl - don't see it; read the book if you can, but drop it if you're bored of it (I'm not a fan of people reading books they don't like just for the sake of finishing them :) )

I will definitely read it! I certainly have the time on my hands these days. I'm not one of those types that feels forced to keep going. In fact, I habitually don't finish books--sometimes even books that I enjoy--like Dave Eggers' Heartbreaking Work of (something, something) Genius. I really like half of it but then my Fall classes started that year and I put it down and never finished it. Drives my mom nuts (she definitely has to read every word of every description even when she hates the book). Not me, I'm always starting books and then switching to something else.

Just saw The Kids Are Alright with Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore. It was fantastic. Really, really enjoyed it. A must see before it leaves the theater.

I'll admit that my movie tastes are not always exactly aligned with the Academy Award panels, but I can't wait for Going the Distance on September 3rd. Mainly because it hits close to home - AND has the duel NY/SF backdrop.

That new Jennifer Aniston film, the Switch, looks good to me even though I'm not a huge Aniston fan. I like the male lead in that.

George Clooney is always good though I prefer him in dramas, like the movie he did last year, "Up in the Air."

Hehe, yes, that looks fun (The Switch, that is), although a little bit off-color: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEYqgyXyk9A

I enjoyed "Up in the Air," which was probably a bit off-color as well...

FINALLY saw Going the Distance with my long-distance boyfriend this week. I would say that the first 45 minutes or so were HILARIOUS, like in a Will Ferrel movie kind of way, and the second half of the movie lost its humorous touch and the characters became even more whiny and annoying than their situation would warrant. They stopped being likeable and I walked away giving them a 50/50 shot of making it. There are certain things that long-distance couples just don't DO (if you haven't seen someone for four months - which, by the way, could easily have been prevented by cutting one or two weekends of heavy drinking in either of their overpriced areas - you meet them at the airport and maximize every moment you have together). But I digress...

Anyway, cute premise and some pretty clever humor in the first half. I wouldn't "Go the Distance" to see it again...

Oh, and they played Letters to Juliet on the plane I was just on, which was very cute, completely unrealistic, beautifully shot (the tiny screens hanging above the aisle didn't do it justice), and totally sappy romantic in a way that can make any sensitive person get overly emotional.

About Going the Distance: I haven't seen that, but I hate when movies that, make a big problem over a problem that no normal person would actually have in real life. For example, I was watching this show Parenthood, the other day (my mom really likes it, but I think it pretty awful) and there was this scene where one of the female characters playing a lawyer just tells another parent that her kid had "bad blood" with another kid and so their kids can't play together. We are supposed to believe that the character, because she is a lawyer not used to the politics of grammer school, would actually be that dense. That show is filled with stuff like that--it just ruins it for me.

@StephSF - sorry you didn't like Going the Distance. I thought some of the lines in that were great. Maybe it didn't get an A, but what about a B-? I want to see Letters to Juliet also, but my husband doesn't want to, so that may be reserved for an airplane ride for me too.

Just saw Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps and I was SO looking forward to it, but while it was good and there were some great lines in it, it seemed a little long and the ending was weak. Plus, I felt like Carrie Mulligan was not believable. I think she gets hired because she can cry on a dime. (BTW, totally off topic, but did anyone see the Julianne Moore YouTube video of her crying for 3 minutes and 26 seconds? Some guy captured every movie she's cried in and it's hilarious to think that she cries in EVERY movie).

Hey, I liked the first 45 minutes of Going the Distance - like you said, great lines. I watched Letters to Juliet on a return flight from visiting my boyfriend which is always a depressing enough experience, so I found it tearjerking in an uplifting way, if that makes any sense.

I'll have to look up that YouTube clip...that sounds awesome!

@Tracypie: I think makes sequels to really great movies like that is generally a bad idea--I mean what's next, a sequel to Titanic? Actually, I think they're better off remaking bad movies. That way they can improve on them rather than tarnish their memory.

Though, you know, Wall Street, the original, is such a morality tale with all that good father bad father stuff. I've always thought it was a little bit simplistic--though of course the Gordon Gecko character really did capture an American type. It's really all about Michael Douglas being own creepy self.

Was Shea LeBuff (sp?) believable? I find him a bit cloying and insubstantial (though, of course, so was Charlie Sheen in the original).

@NightOwInOrinda - LOL - yes, they should TOTALLY remake the bad movies to make them better. My husband thought Shia LaBouf was not believable, but I think there were some moments where he had sincerity. Michael Douglas makes a great Gordon Gecko. They intertwined a lot of the banks (Lehman, Bear Stearns, etc) stories within one story line. And it's funny you should mention Charlie Sheen, because he (Bud Fox) makes an appearance and they exchange some witty banter.

All I can say is that it will make a great rental on Netflix or from the library! ;-)

Has anyone seen The Social Network? It's gotten just about the most sophisticated reviews I could ever imagine for a movie that is about a website that was originally intended to help geeky Harvard guys pick up chicks :)

I went to see it last night. It was okay. The acting was solid and believable (even Justin Timberlake who I think should give up music and just act--he is much better at it). I couldn't really follow the nerdy computer talk in it, but everyone said things with enough passion that you understood the gist of the problems even if you had no idea what they actually meant. It kind of dragged a bit at the end.

Overall though, I don't see what Mark Zuckerburg would be worried about. Other than being a bit geeky, the film doesn't really make him out to be a real villain or anything.

Though, one thing that bothered me was a scene where in order to show that they were at Stanford, they had a girl whose underwear had Stanford written across her tush. And she was a total ditsy chick (like virtually all the girls in the movie).

Overall, though I would recommend it in a luke warm sort of way.

Hmm...ditzy Stanford girls. I see lots of Stanford girls around town, but most of them are wearing pants. I heard that Justin is supposed to be great, and find it funny that he plays the Napster guy.

Couldn't convince any of my guy friends to see it, so I'm seeing Paranormal Activity 2 tonight (it was a compromise between the Social Network/Life As We Know It and The Town/UFC championships). I've seen enough previews to lure me in. I'll post a review of both the movie and the neighborhood in San Carlos where I am meeting my friend from SF.

Have they already made a sequal to that--it feels like they just had the other one out like two minutes ago?

Slightly off topic, but I'm depressed Mad Men is done for another season. I really enjoyed this season.

Yep, sequel is out, and it's probably a good thing that I didn't see the original, because everyone who I talked to AFTER I saw the movie said that it was horrible and the original was better.

Personally, I thought it was pretty cool - Blair Witch-esque but located in sunny San Diego as opposed to the woods of Maryland - I actually thought that having it in that location made the whole thriller theme seem out of context and that much more exciting. They do a nice job of setting the stage and establishing a "normal" family before things start to go haywire, which I thought added to the effect. It did take a while for the film to get rolling (my friend kept saying things to the effect of "somebody die already" for the first half hour), and while they did tie things together in the end, I think they could have made the story more complex with a few pretty simple tweaks.

Overall, I thought it was pretty cool (apparently more graphic than the original, but less graphic than any other horror film I have seen), but I could see why some would not like it. Sometimes, it's nice to see something through an un-tainted lens as opposed to reading other peoples' reviews first.
