Favorite Bakery

What's your favorite SF bakery? One of my favorites is Victoria's, it borders on Chinatown and North Beach. I love their birthday cakes, they all have filling and their stuff is all homemade.

Can you recommend some other good bakeries in the city?

This is not in the SF, but across the bay in Berkeley there is the ACME bakery on Gilman--and getting a fresh loaf from there was the highlight of my mornings back when I lived in the area. It was just the best bread ever. They also supplied all the local stores and may even send some of their bread into the city from there.

I am clearly bad with names and am not sure if this even counts, but I love walking through Little Italy on the border of Chinatown and en route to Fisherman's Wharf. You can't really go wrong with any of these spots.

@StephSF - that's North Beach - Columbus Ave that you are referring to. And you're right. All of the stuff there is pretty good. Stella's is the sister bakery to Victoria's (which I mentioned above). I think they are the best on Columbus.

@NightOwlnOrinda is it the same ACME bread company in the Ferry Building? If so, I love their stuff.

Thank you! Maybe I'll find it again someday - I still get confused sometimes especially living outside of the city. Is Little Italy part of North Beach, or is it its own separate district?

@StephSF - Little Italy IS North Beach. Just another name people call it who are new here. ;-) Because Italian parts of town in other places are called Little Italy (Iike in San Diego).

I wonder why they stopped calling it Little Italy. It is probably some kind of real-estate thing. Like trying to get people to move into the northern Tenderloin by calling it lower Nob Hill.

Any way, when I'm in Mission by the park I really like Tartine's--its just a couple of doors down from Bi-Rite which is a great place to get ice-cream--but that is another story altogether.

Hahahhaha wow. I almost feel like an idiot, but I live outside the city and can't keep track of these things, plus I'm new to the area anyway.

I was in Noe Valley the other day and that looks like a good place to check out some great local bakeries as well. I'll have to research more and follow up with a post.

I think Peasant Pies is in Noe--a really good place to get a pie (not so much for bread as I remember). But really nice. Its on 24th or 23rd by Castro Street. Good stuff! Yummy fillings!

YOu know, I don't get over to Noe often enough, but I love good home-made pies. So that might be worth a trip this weekend.
