@StephSF - I'm not either, although I do love hockey and every once in a while I'll go to a Giants game with a group of people and it's fun. Football - I've been to one 49ers game about 9 years ago. It was rainy, but not that cold. Seemed like you could see from no matter where you were sitting at Candlestick Park.

@nyboy666 - I think this post is extremely important for any sports fanatic new to the area. Nice job! (Sacramento has a basketball team called The Kings - but that's hike just to catch some b-ball.)

Yep, the Kings are cool - I had a business deal with a former King when I lived there - but I agree, it is a hike just to get there.

Is Candlestick any good? Giants Stadium (AT&T Park) is AWESOME - probably the best sports arena I have ever seen. The inside is more like a mall/restaurant than a typical stadium, and the views are pretty good as well. I actually went to a concert and have never been to a game but even if you are not that into the sport, it is worth seeing.

I'm a big football fan--though the Patriots are my team (unfortunately I missed my chance to see them a couple of years ago when they came to town). Unfortunately, it is a little hard being a football in Bay right now. The Raiders have been one of the worst teams in the NFL for almost a decade now (I think that Superbowl year where they got creamed by the Tampa Bay Bucs was their last winning season).

The 49'ers have a little bit of hope going with Mike Singleterry as coach, but have lost their first three games and aren't looking like they are going to do much this year.

The only good thing about this if you just moved hear is that sometimes the Raiders get blacked out TV and you can see one of the better AFC teams instead.

As to the stadiums, the Oakland Colliseum is a step from when they played in LA (I saw them a couple of times in the early 90's there) but Candlestick is a much better experience overall. I'm glad they went back to calling it Candlestick instead of the those corporate names.

I could start going through the roster telling you about each player, but I suspect I have already lost 99% of my audience.

By the way, one thing that I noticed missing from this list are the college teams--just in football, for example, there are the Cal Bears, Stanford Cardianal, San Jose Spartans. Cal and Stanford also have top ranked volleyball teams (on both men and womens' sides) and La Cross etc. For sports fanatics it is certainly worth mentioning.

@StephSF - I think that Candlestick is good for viewing. It's location leaves little to be desired and so does parking from my recollection. But again, I haven't been there in 9 years. I just drive past it all the time.

@TracyPie: Candlestick is a total mud lot. It's below sea level so they are always fighting to keep the field from flooding. The parking lot is a mess. Public transportation is better for the Oakland Coliseum but impossible for Candlestick.

Another good venue for sports is the Cow Palace. I went to see Finding Nemo there with the kids (not the film, it was an Ice Capades kind of a deal) and that was pretty good.

Cow Palace - who plays there? Isn't that next to Candlestick?

I've heard that that's not the best area to live/visit. I got stuck in 49ers traffic a few weeks ago which was brutal as well.

We have a hockey team? Wowww...I shouldn't even be on this post right now. Anyone following the Giants?

BTW I have a gig later this month at AT&T Park, so I'll get to see the back-end of it. I'll be sure to post whatever I am allowed to here to fill you in on what it looks like from the other side!

@Flowergirl: Actually its the San Jose Sharks at the Cow Palace. It's not a bad venue. They were good a few years ago when they first got going. But its funny that you should say Seals becuase the SF Seals were the minor league baseball team that gave Joe DiMaggio his start way back in the 1930's, before he signed with the Yankees. Ironically, the Giants came back in the 1950's and played their first two seasons at what had been the Seals stadium. (They had Willie Mays at the time.)

I don't really follow baseball, but I gather they have made the playoffs. From the buzz, I take it they are not expected to go far.

The San Jose Sharks DO NOT play at Cow Palace they play at HP Pavilion in San Jose. I don't know of any sports teams that play at the Cow Palace. I thought that was more for antique road shows and tattoo expos.

Yeah, that's right. Total brain freeze on my part. I think that they played there a few times just when they were getting up and running and it just stuck in my mind. The Cow Palace is obviously not even in San Jose.

YES! Crepe places in France are incredible. I went to Rennes, which is in Bretagne (the crepe capital of the world) and when I came back, I couldn't eat a restaurant-ordered crepe in the U.S. for months...
