San Francisco Things To Do - July 23, 24 & 25

Last night I saw the musical Young Frankenstein at the Golden Gate Theater and it was fantastic! Such a great cast and set design. Surprisingly longer than I expected, yet I didn't really notice how long it was until after I got out of the theater because it was so entertaining. An absolute visual delight compiled with witty and sexually perverse dialogue, it was entertainingly funny. Not really suitable for children due to the sexual undertones, but the costumes were amazing and the sets were phenomenal. My favorite scene was a tap dancing scene which made me feel like I was watching a Broadway show. Definitely go see it. Only playing for a limited time at Golden Gate Theater.

@Tracypie: That sounds great; I may have to check it out. I love Mel Brooks (something that is probably obvious given my avatar), and I really liked his Broadway version of the Producers.

The tap dancing sequence must have been the scene where the Monster taps to "Putting on the Ritz" but he can't actually pronounce his lines?

This weekend I am going to a place called Coda on Market to listen to some jazz; I am really looking forward to it.

@DocFrankenstein: yes, the tap sequence is performed to Puttin' on the Ritz. It was really quite good. Coda on Market sounds pretty cool. I've been to Bruno's and Pena Pachemama for Jazz so I'd be interested in hearing about that. Hope you post it.

I was about to mention Jazz at Pearl's on North Beach but when I looked it up I just found out that it bit the dust. WOW! It was THE place to go for Jazz in the city. Depressing.

Yeah, I saw that show a while back in New York. Not my favorite, but then again I am not much of a Mel Brooks follower, either.

My personal favorite is Wicked, which I believe is still playing in SF. Family-friendly, great plot, and some of the best music you will ever encounter. Turns the Wizard of Oz upside-down. A true gem.

Yeah, Wicked is playing at the Orpheum, which is a great venue for musical theater (I think I saw Cats there in 2001). I noticed too that they have Beauty and the Beast coming next month which could be a fun sort of a family outing for those that can afford it.

There were a few other interesting shows as well like Shrek and Billy Elliot, if you are into the whole movie into theater experience. Here is the link for anybody interested:

Oooh good call. Are Orpheum and Golden Gate the only theaters that play mainstream Broadway-style musicals? Or are there others? I know SF has a bit of a musical theater scene, although nothing like New York, where the shows are more popular than going to the movies (at least among my crowd of friends).

Beauty and the Beast is fun for the family, and Shrek is supposed to be kind of in the same camp, although Billy Elliot has more substance. Wicked, however, is in a league of its own by comparison. Here is some more info:
