Avon

Avon is a great little town in Colorado, especially for those looking for great skiing. It is a convenient place to stay for anyone heading up to hit the trails at Beaver Creek. Although there are a lot of tourists, this would be a great place to call home, provided you didn't live by the interstate. There are some great houses in Avon that have spectacular views of the great Colorado Rockies, although they do come at quite a price. There is tons to do in the town with a lot of great restaurants and fun shops, in addition to the outdoor adventures.

Avon does have it's downside though as I-70 runs through it. In addition to the many tourists, there are numerous gas stations, fast food restaurants, and places for those traveling through to just stop for a quick break.

For those who live in Avon there are a lot of job opportunities in the accommodation and food services industries, as this is the largest industry by far, followed by construction. The median household income is about $49,000 and an average single family detached home here costs about $753,000 so the cost of living isn't too practical for most people. For those who can afford to live here the schools are very good and the crime rate pretty low.

The town of Avon is the community at the base of Beaver Creek ski area along I-70. Avon is only an exit away from Vail and when you have a ski pass for Vail you can bus to and from Beaver Creek as well.

The ski resort is really nice and tucked away with lots of runs, but is obviously not at huge or open as Vail. The little ski resort is pretty high end but don't let that stop you, its Colorado and the sunshine rules over snooty people:)

Avon has grown a lot over the last years, there are people that live there that don't ski (amazing huh). There is a Home Depot, grocery store, restaurants (really great ones) and some night life--it is a cool place and wouldn't be a bad place to live for early (or late) retirees, families and also mountain people who work and sweat as contractors etc...If you have some dough there are amazing properties up and around the hills of Avon and it is cheaper than Vail. And its better than being by Vail because there are less tourists and it just feels more like a real town.

I spent a week at Christy Lodge a condo group right off the interstate, and while that is a strange place that I am not really recommending it was fun to be in Avon for a week. My roommates parents also have a sweet property/home in Avon up a bit out of town that they use as their vacation home now but plan to eventually move out of Boulder when they retire. I think a lot of properties near Avon are seasonal. If you have kids Avon is part of the Eagle County Schools with Vail and the Vail Valley towns and communities and that school district has a great reputation.
