"A pretty community near the Pine River"

Sitting in the beautiful Pine River Valley, Bayfield is home to 2,338 residents. Back in 1906 two families, the Bay's and the Schiller's, donated land for a supply area for nearby residents. Not being able to decide on a name for the town, the two men of each family decided to toss a coin to see who the town would be named after, and Bayfield was born.

The most common industry in Bayfield is construction, and the median household income here is $53,090 which is just below the state average. As far as housing goes, the average median home price is $252,356 which is about $15,000 more than the state's average, so the cost of living here is typical for most of Colorado. About 81% of the town is white, followed by 13% Hispanic. Bayfield also has a lower than state average of families living in poverty with 11% being below the threshold.

Bayfield is a pretty area with a lot of water nearby in the form of rivers, lakes, and ponds. Fly fishing on the Pine River is very popular and there are numerous spots nearby for other outdoor sports such as: water skiing, camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting.

"Bayfield -- A growing community just east of Durango"

Bayfield is a small SW Colorado town of about 1,500 residents. The public schools in Bayfield get very good reviews and kids come in from many surround mountain communities and remote areas to attend school. The football team gets a lot of love and support and sports seem to be a big deal in town.

The average household income in Bayfield is about $40,000 so this is a typical middle-class town in Colorado. The cost of real estate is significantly lower than Durango just 20 miles to the west and many people who work or go to school in Durango live in Bayfield. There are more and more job opportunities in Bayfield and economically the area does better than most in Colorado as a whole. The natural gas industry is particularly strong there.

There are creeks, crop fields, mountains in the distance and recreation opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors all around Bayfield. Vallecito Reservoir and Lemon Reservoir are just north of town as well as the vast San Juan National Forest.
