"Carbondale is a sweet mountain town as the foot of Mt. Sopris"
Carbondale is in site of the lovely Mt. Sopris and just about 20 miles from Aspen. Carbondale is just south of Glenwood Springs on the way to Aspen. There are about 6,500 people who call Carbondale home and the average household income is about $52,000 which is less than Aspen's $60,000. This is a bedroom and more affordable community than living in Aspen. There are so many beautiful properties around Carbondale and there is affordable homes and apartments in the town.
The town was names after Carbondale, Pennsylvania where some of the early Colorado settlers came from. Many of the early settlers were part of the silver boom in Aspen and many early settlers also farmed the pretty wet valley. Until the 1980's Carbondale was in the coal business from mines mostly up in the nearby coal Crystal River Valley. There are natural hotsprings up in that regions not far from Carbondale. There are also many trails and county roads and amazing places to explore in the area.

"An eco-friendly outdoor lovers paradise"
Carbondale lies just southeast of Glenwood Springs and just northwest of Aspen. This small town of just 6,400 takes being green to a whole new level. Three large environmental companies call Carbondale home and in the nicer months you can see the bike trails lined with people commuting to work. The police station, fire station, and even the recreation center are all solar powered. The estimated household income here is just over $70,000 with a median home price of $458,000, both of which are well above state of Colorado averages. 58% of the people living here are White with 39% being Hispanic. The other 3% is made up of a mixture of races. The interesting thing about Carbondale is that most people associate green technology with the democratic party, but the town itself is split down the middle as for voting democratic/republican.
Carbondale is very close to some great downhill skiing, but nordic skiers wouldn't want to leave Carbondale as there are numerous trails and just a few miles outside of the town is the Spring Gulch Nordic Trail which has over 12 miles of trails. During the spring, summer, and fall months, weather permitting, there is an incredible bike trail that goes from Glenwood Springs, through Carbondale, and on into Aspen. This bike path, called the Rio Grande Recreation Trail is just over 39 miles long and travels along the old railroad route. Parts of the trail are alongside the Roaring Fork River and the trail has some pretty incredible views. Crystal River is also near Carbondale and offers some great kayaking adventures.
For a town with such a small population, Carbondale has a pretty amazing amount of restaurant choices. However, with the number of tourists to this town it makes sense. The majority of the people living here work in hospitality, construction, retail trade, or education. While there isn't a hospital or comprehensive medical practice here there are doctors available and there is a hospital just 21 miles away in Glenwood Springs.
This little town would be a great place for outdoor lovers who are interested in working in the green sector or in hospitality. While there are families living here, the schools are just average based on testing standards.
