"Voted "Friendliest small town in Florida!""
High Springs is a small town just 30 minutes north of Gainesville FL ( home the the Gators and Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow!), and 80 minutes from Jacksonville. Here you are sure to find the small town life with friendly faces and warm welcomes. The population is about 3, 700. Our government is a mayor and four Commissioners. City Hall services include water, garbage collection, code enforcement, and a County Tag office.
High Springs is well known for it's many antique shops where you can find anything from old toys and dolls to the antique glassware or jewelry and everything in between.
Although there are very few doctors and dentists, it is only a 30 minutes drive to Gainesville or lake City where hundreds are available. There is a medical center here but it is not open 24 hours and there is no hospital.
There are several small restaurants with a friendly atmosphere and hearty fare. The local bars are few, partying is not a favorite past time here. Although you can easily find a game of pool or darts and a beer if you want to relax and enjoy an evening out.
The schools are good but could be better. I feel the teacher/student ratio is poor. Most of the teachers are fully qualified and know their subject. I am only familiar with the high school which I am for the most part happy with and has a great athletics department.
The kids here love their sports. You can find the baseball, softball, football fields full and the stands too. ALong with the schools teams there are many local recreational teams affiliated with local churches. Here we have a "Pray then Play" with the local Baptist Church. This program has many teams such as volleyball, flag football, t-ball, cheerleading, soccer and more.
This area of Florida is well known for the many springs. Nearby are Blue Springs, Ichetucknee Springs State Park, Poe Springs, and many more. Swimming, fishing, canoeing and tubing are a favorite on the Sante Fe and Ichetucknee Rivers which are beautifully breathtaking. The Oleno State Park has camping, hiking, RV parking, a playground, cabins available for renting, fishing, canoeing /kayaking, picnic areas, and pets are allowed. Several times throughout the year Oleno holds festivals and fairs for local venders to show their crafts along with historic festivals to celebrate our history.
Here we really are a vacationers dream. Living here is knowing you are safe, secure and always a short drive from something fun to do and surrounded by kind, caring neighbors.
