Peach Lake

Peach Lake is a hamlet with multiple identities, geographically speaking. It is part of Putnam County because part of it is in Southeast and is partly in Westchester County through North Salem. The area has a long history and there are documents from the time of the Dutch explorations in the 17th century indicating that Native American tribes lived in the area and called it Lake Pehquenakonck. Infact, it is believed that the earlier English name of the lake Peach Pond is a derivative from the Native American name Pech-Quen. It is as likely a reason as anything else I have heard, because there are no Peach orchards in the area!

Life in Peach Lake is quiet and laid back. It offers the kind of semi-rural ambience typical of these parts and so while you can expect a life filled with great views and spectacular hikes, you also have to be prepared to own a car for buying basic necessities. It is sometimes truly hard to imagine that Peach Lake is only a little over an hour away from hectic New York City.

This area was once the summer destination for NYC families but today it offers relatively affordable year round living. The lake is largely used by residents of Peach Lake and the four communities here and does not see excessive traffic or congestion. Shopping and dining are accessible in Brewster and along Route 22. Formal entertainment is also reachable via car.

The North Salem and Brewster Public School Districts which cover this area have a reasonably good reputation.

Peach Lake is perfect for those who like the idea of water-side living and are flexible about proximity to shopping or entertainment.

Peach Lake is a beautiful residential area and hamlet of the town of Southeast, shared by both Putnam and Westchester counties, making the area a uniquely convenient as well as remotely isolated environment. It was once mainly farmland and has managed to stay largely hidden from the rest of Southeast civilization.

Peach Lake is named after the small lake which resides there, and while residents have access to it, visitors will not. People don’t come to Peach Lake for entertainment unless they’re visiting friends who live in the area, as it’s far out in the sticks, save for North Salem and Brewster which are the nearest towns in either side of the area. The only road leading in is Rt 121, which can be easily accessed by Interstate 84, a busy highway that criss-crosses Interstate 684.

That said, people who live here can access civilization by way of the Brewster Train Station and the Starr Ridge Library in Brewster is a great way to connect with others and find out what’s new. The Brewster schools offer children an excellent education, as well as North Salem, and kids will have access to both of these school districts as well as others in town of Southeast. You’ll have to visit neighboring towns for shopping opportunities, and while there is no nightlife to speak of, if peace and quiet and highly affordable lakeside country living is what you’re looking for, then you’ve found it on the lovely banks of Peach Lake.

The hamlet of Peach Lake is a bit of a geographic oddity: it's split, with a portion in Putnam's Southeast and a portion in Westchester's North Salem. However the portion in Southeast is one of the nicest communities in Putnam County.

Originally a small farming community, made up mainly of four families, Peach Lake has managed to maintain it's rural charm. The homes are all beautiful and the roads are well-maintained. For their size and the beauty of the community, property is available at fair prices. There are still several operating farms, which are becoming a sad rarity in Putnam County which was once full of them.

Peach Lake is largely residential, with only a few small business and restaurants available locally. These options, though, reflect the general appeal of the hamlet to the best of their ability and are attractive, clean and offer quality services. Because Peach Lake is close by the Connecticut border and laced by I-84, I-684 and Route 6, it's easy to travel for more shopping and entertainment, though. Travel is also easy to Westchester County which will open up many more opportunities for work and shopping.

The hamlet of Peach Lake is a great, quiet place to raise a family although some kids, as the desire more and more modern diversions, may want to spend more time elsewhere.

Peach Lake is one of four distinct lakeside communities in Putnam County, others being Lake Carmel (Kent), Brewster Hill (Brewster), and Lake Peekskill (Patterson). Each community, much like Peach Lake, was once a vacationing hotspot for New York City residents looking to escape the heat and hustle and bustle of the summer months. Straddling Route 121 in the Town of Southeast and North Salem (Westchester County), the hamlet consists of cottages and small bungalows, with median home prices nearing $415,000 with a population of less than 2,000 people.

For the most part, there aren't many commercial or local businesses in Peach Lake; however, this can be forgiven since Southeast and Route 22's commercial sector is nearby. The hamlet is also very close to Interstates 84 and 684, which provide outlets to Dutchess and Westchester counties, as well as Connecticuts (about a 10 minute drive). It provides somewhat of a getaway with easy access to amenities, restaurants and shopping outlets. In theory, it's a great place to raise children, especially because of its low crime rate and recreational opportunities- Peach Lake itself is beautiful especially in the summer. It may not be the greatest place for young professionals or college grads who are looking for a fast-paced lifestyle, however.

Residents of Peach Lake will most likely send their children to Brewster Central School District or North Salem School District. Brewster schools are larger in size and offer great academic, extracurricular and athletic programs. North Salem is much smaller, and may be a better option for parents who want a more intimate atmosphere for their children. I'd recommend either, however- they're both excellent.

The pretty hamlet of Peach Lake actually falls into two towns, the towns of North Salem and Southeast, and spills over into two counties, Westchester and Putnam. Peach Lake has a lovely Catskills-style feel to it with many vacation homes and vacation homes turned permanent dwellings. Some are still somewhat affordable for new homeowners and those looking to escape the rigors of more urban Westchester County epicenters. The area is strewn with gorgeous old farmhouses and story book VIctorians. The town has charming events such as ice cream socials and bingo nights and there is a wonderful and rare wholesomeness to the area.

The commute to New York City is a bit lengthy, although some do it, at one hour and a half.

There are an abundance of restaurants within driving distance of Peach Lake including On the Border Brother's Pizza, Benvenuti Restaurant, Portofino's, Everready Diner, Red Rooster Drive-in, Arch Restaurant, Aversanos, Southeast Grille House, Kelly's Corner and Fiesta Mexicana, all located in Brewster. In South Salem there is the lavish and romantic Le Chateau Restaurant In South Salem you will find 121 Restaurant and Vox. In Danbury, CT there is Rosy Tomorrows and the Desert Moon Cafe, amongst many others. As for retail shopping, people often drive to the plentiful Danbury Fair Mall or to Somerstown Shopping Center in Somers,

Peach Lake itself is a great recreational area where many folks take out their boats and even water ski. There is also a lovely country club in North Salem.

The North Salem School District is quite good and the median average SAT score is 1673.

Peach Lake is very safe with little crime.

The median home cost is roughly $412,300.

The population of Peach Lake is fairly small at 1,671 people.
