"Beautiful neighborhood but I'm not a fan"

Ok, Bel-Air is beautiful. The homes are, generally, enormous and opulent. This is definitely the neighborhood to live in to signify that you've "made it." A lot of the properties in Bel-Air are big enough to house swimming pools, tennis courts and guesthouses without compromising any room for a 10,000 square foot main house. This is a serious money neighborhood. But, I don't really like it. For one, because the properties are so well guarded by greenery, gates, and mile-long driveways, you can't really see any of the houses. I understand the idea behind this (the desire for privacy). But, it makes the neighborhood really creepy. It's like every house is in the middle of nowhere. It would make me so uncomfortable to live here at night. Especially because Bel-Air is a gleaming beacon to people that there are really expensive items within the homes. Furthermore, a number of the homes were built in the 60's and 70's and they definitely look it. It's like a bunch of oversized Brady Bunch houses. Not cute.
As far as a young person goes, thank god for Bel-Air's proximity to Westwood because there is nothing to do in this neighborhood. Your options are pretty much Bel Air Bar and Grill (really expensive and older crowd) or the bar at the Luxe Bel-Air (hanging out in a hotel bar, not so much fun). The neighborhood is pretty much strictly houses; but, I guess when you have a tennis court and block-sized kitchen you don't really need to leave your house.
The neighborhood vibe is pretty sterile. There isn't anyone out on the streets because everyone's property is so far back. So, it really is eerily quiet in this place. A lot of old school celebrities live in Bel Air like Steve Martin, Burt Reynolds, Hugh Hefner, and Michael Caine.

"Sweet Smell of Success"

The best way to experience Bel-Air is in a convertible. Even the air smells luxurious here, scented most of the year with jasmine and citrus blooms from the meticulously maintained lawns of the rich and famous. Don’t come looking for movie stars, however. You won’t find them here, where walls and hedges are built high to discourage paparazzi. But take a drive up Stone Canyon Road to the Bel-Air Hotel and have a drink in the bar for a vicarious taste of the good life.
