Brentwood is a neighborhood of approximately 3,582 residents located in the northeast section of the city. It is borders are formed by New York Avenue N.E., the rail yard to the east of North Carolina Street N.E., Rhode Island Avenue N.E. and Montana Avenue N.E.. In 2010, the average price for homes sold in this neighborhood was $207,176, with only about 33% of the homes owner occupied. Like a number of other neighborhood, this neighborhood faces a number of challenges.
The U. S. Senate Page School is the only school within Brentwood. Shopping is better than many neighborhoods as there is a Home Depot and a Giant Foods located here along with many other shopping opportunities. The Brentwood Recreation Center offers residents entertainment opportunities as well. Residents will also find a library here as well as the museum of the Architect of the Capitol. There are numerous Metro bus stops in the neighborhood and many will take advantage of the Rhode Island Metro station as well. There is only one place of worship in the neighborhood. Noise may issue as Brentwood features a major rail yard where both Amtrak and Metro trains regularly travel thru.
As far as crime is concerned data seems to indicate that the area is relatively safe and most crime seems to be focused on crimes against property, although there are crimes against people as well. As always you should check the recent statistics and make an informed decision before you move into any neighborhood.

"moderately priced and close to work"
Brentwood is an area mostly controlled by the government. Like much of DC, there are government buildings everywhere you turn, and a major rail yard lies within its borders as well. Housing is scarce, but moderately priced with houses running about 300K. Such a price is quite affordable for blue collar workers and government employees who may work there. The area is close to Gallaudet University which, because its students are Deaf and unaware of the loudness of their radios, can make the neighborhood a bit noisier at night. For this reason it is also necessary to ensure that one keeps an eye out for pedestrians who cannot hear your car coming. Naturally the rail yard doesn't help either. With that said, the neighborhood is safe relative to most other areas surrounding the Arboretum and Gallaudet University. Having the additional law enforcement presence due to the government facilities really helps in this area. People who like to walk their dogs after work may not find Brentwood to be an ideal location due to all the traffic. Of course, I cannot recommend the public schools in this area, so if you have the money it might be better to send your children to private schools.

"Where the Past Meets the Present"
Private ownership across several centuries has allowed the Brentwood neighborhood to develop in a way that is unique in the District of Columbia's history. Not surprisingly, much of Washington’s acreage has long been controlled in one way or another by the federal government. However, until most of it was taken over under eminent domain laws during the 1940s, Brentwood was the private estate of the Winslow family. Their stately home, demolished to make way for new development, gave the area its elegant name.
While there are numerous single and multiple family homes in Brentwood, the area is more well known for its numerous businesses and industrial areas. In addition to housing the Washington Metro's extensive maintenance facility, it is also home to one of the largest mail handling and sorting facilities in the area. You may have heard of this facility a few years ago when it was the site of the anthrax poisoning event that took the lives of two postal employees.
Bordering Galludet University, Brentwood also features excellent public transportation and the nationally famous Union Market, one of the oldest continually operating farmer's markets in the country.
