Brookland

Brookland is a neighborhood of approximately 8,332 residents located in the northeast section of the city. The boundaries of the neighborhood are generally defined by South Dakota Avenue N.E, Rhode Island Avenue N.E., 9th Street N.E., Otis Street N.E, 14th Street N.E. and Taylor Street N.E.. In 2010 the average price for a home that sold here was $328,738, with 61% of the homes being owner occupied. Homes here are a combination of attached and detached single family homes with some multifamily homes as well.

There are a number of schools in Brookland including St. Anthony's Catholic School, Hyde PCS and Burroughs Elementary School. Howard University School of Divinity is also located in the neighborhood. Shopping and dining opportunities exist in the neighborhood and are primarily located on the boundaries of the neighborhood. Residents are lucky to have the Brookland Cua Metro station as well as a great deal of Metro Bus stops within the neighborhood. Those looking for places to worship with find at least 12 religious facilities here. Taft Recreation Center provides recreational opportunities. Although there are many trees within the neighborhood, you will not find any dedicated green space within Brookland. Fort Bunker Hill Park is adjacent to Brookland, but it does not fall within the boundaries of the neighborhood itself.

The lack of crime according to the most recent statistics will be appealing to many. As always check the most recent crime statistics and make an informed decision as to the crime risk in any neighborhood.

With a rich history, thriving churches, and reasonable housing whether you're a professional or a student, Catholic is certainly one of the more appealing residential areas of the district. The area around Catholic University provides a lot of nightlife opportunities, but like American's neighborhood, never gets overly rowdy with college students. But if you're hungry for craziness on a Saturday, you're still not far from Adams Morgan.

The neighborhood boasts much of what would-be locals are looking for in the city: rent is less than arm and a leg, the neighborhood is diverse and safe, acclaimed restaurants and bars and easily accessible grocery stores if you'd rather stay in. While a little east of the heart of it all, it is still a fun place to live in its own right.

Brookland is one of the areas around Catholic University, and contains a monastery and several Catholic sites. Because of the monastery and relatively few apartments, Brookland is quiet in spite of its location next to a university. Listening to the church bells is a bonus for the spiritually inclined, although Sunday morning does bring a bit more traffic. Brookland also has the distinction of being extremely safe. Green space abounds, and overall this neighborhood is extremely family friendly. If you like to live in a small town, but need to live close to your work, this is a worthwhile choice.

Adding to its quiet nature is the lack of night life. Unlike most neighborhoods close to universities, there aren't really any nightclubs. However, if the family restaurant is your preference then there are plenty of those. Predictably, those wanting to spend a night out on the town will mix with plenty of students having a good time after class. Groceries are easy to buy, but a shopping center would require some travel. Because there is plenty of public transport, this is no problem. There are some tourists because of the Catholic sites, but not enough to ruin the charm of this lovely neighborhood.

Brookland may be the only neighborhood in Washington that grew up around a faith community. In this case, the community is the Catholic Church as represented by everything from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. In fact, there are over 50 Catholic oriented organizations housed in this immediate area. While this religious history can still be seen in the presence of Catholic University and the Franciscan Monastery, the community is now diverse in every sense of the word, from race to religion. It also has been home to a diverse group of people through the years, including Florida’s most famous author, Marjorie Kennan Rawlings and delightful actress and singer Pearl Bailey.
You can appreciate the community spirit of this place by volunteering a Ronald McDonald House or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants. You can also pick up a few items at any of several local stores. And, for the more spiritually minded, the bells from the Basilica ring a regular intervals throughout the day.

Brookland is pretty much a GREAT urban area with a suburban feel/appeal! It's located immediately surrounding Catholic University, Trinity College and St. Paul's College.It has a variety of business that cater to both the needs and desires of those that live in and visit the area!

For the service-minded individual, there is the Capital Area Food Bank, casual laid back dining at Colnel Brooks Tavern, and of course the Brookland/CUA Metro station where there are several buses that take you into Downtown DC without transfer depending on your destination!
