"Vintage Small Town Feel, Way Out East"

While there are several neighborhoods in the District that bear a sort of pastel box style housing from the mid-to-late 20th century, most of them have sadly let the quaintness of these designs fall by the wayside. Such is not the case in Deanwood. It is charming in its simplicity, with considerably less of the crime and grit than other neighborhoods from its era.

While housing is affordable and the area is perfect for families on a budget, this neighborhood is so far out east that it is basically Maryland. While this is not quite as delusional as when Northern Virginians, for instance, think they live in DC, but for those looking to be where the action is, affordable housing options can be found nearer to the center of the city.
Pros
  • charming late 20th century houses
  • great for families on a budget
Cons
  • farther east than any of the political action

"Affordable Housing"

Deanwood is a neighborhood located in the Northeast section of the city and has approximately 5,635 people living here. The neighborhood is located on the Maryland state line (Eastern Avenue) bordered by the Anacostia Parkway, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and Division Avenue. The median house price in 2010 was $108,227, which is very affordable for a home in the District.

In addition to the low price of the homes here, many will find the Deanwood Metro Station very appealing. Also the proximity to Route 50 and Interstate 95 for those commuting to jobs in Maryland is ideal. Schools in the neighborhood include Ronald H. Brown Middle School, Houston Elementary School, Burrville Elementary School and Idea PCS-Integrated Design Electronics Academy. Deanwood is also the home to over 25 places of worship. Deanwood Recreation Center is located within the neighborhood as well. Anacostia Park and the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are nearby.

Although there are a number of small grocery stores in the neighborhood, shopping is problematic. Restaurants and places for entertainment are also scarce in Deanwood, Crime of various types, including assault and robbery is a big issue if you are looking to move here.
Pros
  • Closeness to Metro and Route 50 I-95
  • nice, inexpensive housing

"suburban hodgepodge"

Deanwood is one of those places where young people starting out can make their dreams come true. There is a great deal of economic diversity and fixer up homes, which can be reinvented according to their dreams. Think extreme makeover home edition, and you will get the idea. Of course, this might make your home another one of the popular community gathering spots should you decide to host a backyard barbecue. Then again, having other, more run down houses around yours will keep the home value down in the intermediate term. As for other factors, Deanwood is convenient to the shopping in Maryland, and there is plenty of public transportation as well. Because of the traffic in the District, consider this a major advantage. Without it, or if you don’t have a good public transportation route to work, be prepared to spend a lot of time in traffic every morning. Deanwood, sadly, is surrounded by many crime-ridden neighborhoods, something to keep in mind if you plan to return home well after dark on a regular basis. Keep in mind that many people who have the same means as those buying homes in Deanwood also consider living in the suburbs. Anyhow, the chance to get a house and yard for cheap is worth checking out.

  • nice, inexpensive housing

  • the homes are not very large

"A Charming Present With An Amusing Past"

Deanwood is one of those little neighborhoods that look exactly like what they are: old, settled and sedate. This is not a spot where party animals looking for excitement are going to want to live. On the other hand, since most of us eventually settle down, it might be a place that they would want to live sometime in the future.
Since most of the local architecture consists of small homes on large lots, it stands out in the crowded urban District of Columbia. While the houses were constructed primarily of brick or wood during the early part of the 20th century, they have been well maintained and hardly show their age.
Deanwood is also one of those places that seem to almost ooze history. These homes have housed many famous Americans, including Civil Rights leader Nannie Helen Burroughs and singer Marvin Gaye. Once upon a time, it even had its own amusement park. Suburban Gardens serve the entertainment needs of African American families for almost 20 years.
Today, most people who live in Deanwood are either retired or work elsewhere in the area. They find it easy to come and go either in their own cars or on the easily accessed DC Metro.

  • nice, inexpensive housing
Cons
  • the homes are not very large
