"Polar Opposite of the Circle"

The neighborhood images on this page are extremely misleading photos of Dupont Circle, which is actually in an entirely different quadrant of the city from Dupont Park. In all honesty, this is a neighborhood I didn't know existed until I came upon Street Advisor. When one lives on the north side of the metro, they tend to stick to their region.

Dupont Park is very green, and bordered by several different parks, with housing options on the upper side of affordable. Definitely a good location if you have a car, a family, or don't mind a long train commute into the city proper (or if you love ice skating; a rink is open year round), but again, don't let the title fool you. If you're looking for nightlife here, you will be disappointed.

  • Far out in the boonies

"Lots to offer"

Dupont Park is a neighborhood of approximately 3,612 residents located in the southeast section of the city. The neighborhood’s boundaries are generally defined as being within the footprint of Pennsylvania Avenue S.E., Carpenter Street S.E., Pope Street S.E, M Street S.E. and the Anacostia Freeway. In 2010, the average price of a home sold here was $217,178 with 64% of the homes being owner occupied. Homes here tend to be attractive single-family homes on wooded lots. As with many neighborhoods there is a commercial component to the neighborhood as well.

The Howard Road Academy and St. Francis Xavier School are found here. Restaurants and shopping are located within the neighborhood, mainly around Penn Branch Shopping Center and Pennsylvania Avenue S.E.. However they are somewhat restricted in their offerings so many will want to venture out for these activities. Public transportation is available with numerous Metro Bus stops being located in the neighborhood. Those with cars will find the Washington D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles convenient. Dedicated green space is located in nearby Anacostia Park, Twining Square, L’Enfant Square and Pope Branch Park. Residents will have several options for places to worship.

Crime is where the neighborhood will appeal to many wanting to live in the southeast section of the city. Recent crime statistics indicate that crimes against people and property are infrequent and that the neighborhood is relatively safe. There is a fire station and a Police station near by. As always check the most recent crime statistics and make an informed decision as to the crime risk in any neighborhood. Overall, a very nice neighborhood!

"Ray of Hope"

Dupont Park is a relatively affluent area of Southeast DC. In addition to the poorer citizens, the area has middle class residents and even some who are fairly well-off. Apparently, this has been the case for several generations: it is a good neighborhood from back in the days of segregation in DC, when Ward 7 was almost exclusively Black. Although much of the rest of Southeastern DC is a ghetto, Dupont Park has managed to hold its own. In fact, the neighborhood is slowly improving even more to the extent that some professionals live there.
Most houses are well kept, with trees and nice lawns. Quite a few homes rival their counterparts in tony sections of Northwest, and date from about the same period. Anyhow, this is a safe place to come home to after work, and there are even some major stores close by. Doctors offices—including an abortion clinic—and pharmacies call the area home. Perhaps the only major complaint among residents is that there are few sit-down restaurants, partially because the population density is low, and partially because there is very little public transportation going through the area. This neighborhood derives its name from Fort Dupont Park, a large greenway nearby. It is an historic park, and there are plenty of recreational activities there. Not a bad place to live.
