"Pricey shopping trap cradled by the highways"

Gateway is a fairly pricey place to live in Northwest Austin, without a lot of charm or character. Most of the housing can be found in apartment complexes and high rise apartments, along with a smaller number of single-family homes and a few smaller apartment buildings.

Gateway is essentially a shopping trap cradled between highway 183 and the Mopac Expressway. Here you’ll find strip malls, outlet stores (Nordstrom, REI), and the Westgate Mall. There is a movie theater located not too far from the mall (Regal Gateway Stadium 16 Cinema), and there are a fair number of eateries. You can find sushi, a Mexican Margarita bar, and the North by Northwest Restaurant and Brewery, which has a full bar, standard American fair, and a gluten free menu.

While most of Gateway caters to mall shoppers and the suburban commuters who live there, Gateway is also the site of the West Pickle Research Building, which is home to UT’s advanced technology department. Here, UT students and professors conduct research and development projects. So, there is also a small student population in Gateway.

"Nice Place to Shop In Northwest Austin"

Located on the north side of the intersection of North Mopac Expressway and State Highway 183, the Gateway neighborhood of Northwest Austin is a business district with plenty shopping and dining options. At the intersection of two of the most traveled roads in the city, it's easy to get to if you don't go during rush hour. This is a typical urban shopping center without any of the flavor you find in most parts of the city.

It is home to the Gateway Shopping Center which has a number of retail stores with clothing for men and women, sporting goods, toys, restaurants, and a movie theatre. If you love games and fun with your food, there's a Dave and Busters on the southern border of the neighborhood where you can enjoy yourself after a day of shopping. If you're looking for bargains, and don't care about charm and ambiance, this is a good place to find some bargains on a wide range of goods and services.

"Quiet spot in north Austin"

Even though it is a bit more spread out than the south side of the city, north Austin still has a lot to offer. Situated between two major streets, Gateway offers all the advantages of this side of town with very few drawbacks, and even those are fairly minor in scope.

In addition to close access to both Loop One, and Highway 183, there is major shopping available at hand whenever you need it. A trip to Whole Foods, or an afternoon spent strolling the Arboretum will always be within reach. Several green belts can be found if you roam just a little further out, and there is always the scenery from the West Texas hill country to be enjoyed down Highway 360.

The neighborhood itself is quiet and upscale without being too exclusively priced. The only real downside of this location is that traffic congestion can stretch your daily commute into something less than comfortable. This can be especially true if your work place is located in another part of town, or you find your drive time overlaps rush hour. On the whole, this is a very comfortable spot of North Austin to call home, offering comfort and convenience on the north side of things.

"Great if you love to shop"

This far northwest Austin neighborhood is notable for its convenient location to a couple of major roadways in town, giving it fairly quick access to points both north and south. Without traffic (and this is an important qualifier), it is a manageable 15-minute drive to downtown. This is a neighborhood that appeals to those looking for newer housing construction and proximity to plenty of retail establishments. It is not for those seeking to immerse themselves in Austin’s offbeat and funky side, as not much of Austin’s character can be found here.

Located at the intersection of Highway 183 (which forms the western boundary) and MoPac Expressway (which forms the eastern boundary), with W. Braker Lane marking the northern limits, some would consider this a rather sterile environment. But for others, it is a shopping heaven. Almost every national retail chain typically found in cities is located here. There are a few shopping complexes in the area, including the Arboretum area, where one can also find second locations for a few of Austin’s local eateries. Farther north is the fairly recent and upscale outdoor shopping mall, The Domain, which caters to the newer, high-end of Austin’s residents.

It is not a diverse neighborhood by any means, and is dominated by apartment complexes and condominiums. The housing complexes typically offer many attractive amenities, such as pools, fitness centers, tennis courts and walking and jogging trails. But for young professionals, particularly those working for some of the nearby high-tech businesses, the Gateway neighborhood can be a good fit.

"All Shopping"

The Gateway neighborhood is North Austin is hardly considered a community as you will not find a single house there. It is strictly a shopping and business district tucked away within the triangle formed by the intersecting Hwy 183 and Hwy 1, catering to the purchasing needs of the surrounding neighborhoods. There are no parks, but large scale gyms for individuals to obtain their daily workout routine and a large number of restaurants in the immediate area, most of which are large nationwide chains. Those who are visiting this area of the city can also stay at one of the several hotels that are set within this off the beaten path financial district.

The Gateway Shopping Center contains a Whole Foods Market and the Regal Gateway Stadium which features many movie screenings and Arboretum Crossing holds another collection of chain stores and shops. This area of town appears to resemble any other suburban shopping center as there a very few things present here that are unique to only Austin. The northern half of the Gateway neighborhood between Hwy 360 and W Baker Ln. are numerous professional buildings, many of which belong to research and information technology firms, hence it makes sense that one of the main streets is called Research Blvd. While a place to obtain your grocery and shopping needs, do not ever expect or hope to live within this highway triangle.
