George Washington University

George Washington University is a neighborhood located in the northwest section of the city and is home to approximately 7,634 residents. As the name of the neighborhood implies, everything revolves around the university or as many refer to it, GW. The boundaries for the neighborhood include K Street N.W., F Street N.W., 19th Street N.W. and 24th Street N.W.. in 2010 the average price of a home sold here was $255,900, with 28% of all homes being owner occupied. The neighborhood has a mix of university building as well as some commercial buildings as well as primarily muti-family apartments and condominiums. There a a few "row house" style attached single family homes here as well.

The School Without Walls Senior High School is located here. Non student residents will find little in the way of recreational activities here. Shopping is limited, but there are a number of restaurants in the area. Public transportation is good with the Foggy Bottom Metro station being located at 23rd Street and I Street N.W. There are also many Metro Bus stops in the neighborhood. Green space can be found at Anniversary Park. The George Washington Hospital has an excellent reputation and is a real asset to the neighborhood. The biggest thing that many will find problematic is the traffic here, which can be brutal. Also the protests that occur near the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) can be particularly disruptive.

Crime statistics indicate that this is a very safe neighborhood with most crimes being property type crimes. One of the reasons for this is the George Washington University Police that patrol the neighborhood along with the Metro Police. As always check recent crime statistics to amke an informed decision as to the crime risk in any neighborhood.

In many ways George Washington University is like the oldest son that everyone is so proud of in DC. After all, not only is it smart and well educated, but it also features a handsome campus with rugged, chiseled features. Add to that that it’s great in sports and tends to earn at least some of its spending money and you’ve got the perfect child.
OK, enough hyperbole. In addition to attracting some of the best and brightest students in America, GWU also attracts excellent professors and researchers bringing millions of dollars’ worth of grants to the area each year.
Lie most students, those attending GWU tend to flock toward inexpensive campus housing. However, since many of them come from wealthy families, you’re not as likely to find them subsisting on Raman noodles and hot dogs.
Another great thing is that where there are students, there’s money. Its no surprise then that there are plenty of places to eat and drink around the campus which, by the way, is located next to the Kennedy Center. Can you say “performance majors?” There are also lots of student themed shops around, too, though not as many as you might see in other college towns. I mean, DC does have a life.
