"Full of charm, local gems and city spirit!"

If you want a vibrant, eclectic neighborhood, Graduate Hospital is the area for you. This Southwest Center City neighborhood is gentrification at it’s finest – it is a quick ten-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of the Rittenhouse shops and restaurants, but if you will also find shops, restaurants and hidden getaways right in “G-Ho,” as locals affectionately call it.

The area is very popular amongst hipsters, young professionals, and young families, a recent addition to the area. This is largely because the local Penn Graduate Hospital is within the area’s boundaries. The area is very safe, with low crime and significant street lighting.

Restaurants, shops and cafes seem to sprout up every other week. A recent addition to the area is the popular, top-rated Sidecar Bar & Grill, which is known for its craft beers and delicious brunch. There are also the lesser known gems, such as La Va café, a coffeehouse and BYOB, featuring art-ridden walls and a local flavor, which is great place to meet new people.

Overall G-Ho is an “everybody knows your name” type environment without losing the charm of Center City. It is a quick walk to public transit, parks and green space, and popular Philadelphia attractions. It is a low-cost alternative to areas like Rittenhouse and Old City, as rent and real estate prices are currently very affordable. However, as the area grows in popularity the cost of living may skyrocket, so now is the ideal time to settle into the area.
Pros
  • Eclectic cafes and shops
  • Younger crowd
Cons
  • Getting more expensive
  • No parking

"Have fun in Graduate Hospital Neighborhood!"

Affectionately called G.Ho by most of the younger residents of this neighborhood, Graduate Hospital is one of the best places to live in Philadelphia if you want a neighborhood feel, fairly clean streets and proximity to Center City just south of Rittenhouse Square. This neighborhood stretches down to Broad Street and over to Washington Ave.

A few years ago, new construction was very prevalent in this neighborhood, with rehabbed row homes going up practically every day. This led to greater gentrification of the area, and now it's normal to see college students and young professionals walking the streets in addition to residents who own homes here and have for many years.

Part of the reason that this area is popular to live in is that you don't need to walk into Center City to find a cool bar or restaurant. Places like Grace's Tavern, Resurrection Ale House and Side Car Bar attract not only residents of the neighborhood, but people from all over the city. Graduate Hospital is also less pricey than neighboring Rittenhouse Square and Washington Square, so living here gives you that city feel without emptying your pockets.

One of the biggest downfalls of living in G.Ho is that as more people move into the area, parking spots diminish. Expect to circle the neighborhood for a while before finding a space to park in, especially on weekends.
Pros
  • Proximity to Center City
  • New houses being built
  • Younger crowd

  • No parking

"Southwest Center City - Good Eats!"

When people refer to Philadelphia’s nightlife of the roarin' ‘40s and 50s, they are talking about the South Street boundary of this neighborhood. Eateries, movie theaters, speakeasies and nightclubs made this a must-visit spot to see Lady Day, Ella, and the big bands. A few boarded-up remnants of those days remain. However, some barber shops and BBQs still do a booming business.

Gentrification however has given the area new life. Several institutions call the area home including: Graduate Hospital, Marian Anderson Memorial Home and Park, and The Philadelphia Tribune. The Tribune is the oldest continuously-run African American newspaper in the country. And the Christian Street YMCA holds the same distinction.

It is home to one of the first African American Baptist churches in the nation, The First African Baptist Church. And the Frederick Douglas Memorial Hospital and Training was established on Lombard Street.

What makes the area so popular? It is a brisk walk or bike ride across the bridge to University City and equally convenient
to Center City. As well, public transportation is easily accessible.

Trendy cafes and bistros have sprung up where the nightclubs once held court. The Jamaican Jerk Hut with authentic Jamaican food is located at the corner of Broad and South. Good Eats!

"G-Ho is moving on up"

super fun neighborhood in Philadelphia to live in is Southwest Center City, also known as Graduate Hospital, G-Ho, or Schuylkill Southwest. This neighborhood is bound by South Street to the north, Broad Street to the east, Washington Avenue to the south and the Schuylkill River to the west.
The area is mostly compromised of 19th and 20th century three-story row homes. Southwest Center City has undergone extreme gentrification in recent years and a lot of the homes are brand new and quite beautiful. A lot of young professionals and students have moved to the area because of the affordable living opportunities and easy access to bars and restaurants.
There are a few notable bars in Southwest Center City, including Grace Tavern and the Side Car. Grace Tavern was recently ranked #1 on Philadelphia Weekly’s list of the Top 50 Bars in the city and the Side Car offers a yummy assortment of brunch food and great drink specials throughout the week.
There aren’t a lot of parks in the area. The main one is located on Christian and 21st and is basically just a glorified lot with one tree. During the summer, bands play here and other events take place.
Pros
  • Grace Tavern
  • New houses being built
  • Younger crowd
Cons
  • No parking
  • Still some crime
  • No parks
