"Why is this place even on the map?"
If you asked someone where Harbor Gateway in Los Angeles is, they will most likely have no clue. If you look on the map you'll see how the area is so tiny, and theres really nothing to do or see here. Take a moment to consider the name however, "gateway" it is the gateway to various well known cities and neighborhoods, but it is not one in itself, more-so the gateway to the better areas of LA. If driving through, just keep on driving.

"Not really a neighborhood so much as a collection of neighborhoods"
Harbor Gateway is confusing because no one knows exactly what constitutes Harbor Gateway . . . even the people who live in Harbor Gateway. Even people who live in the town proper will refer to living in Carson or Torrance.
Having said that, this "neighborhood" is not so great. It's adjacent to a lot of great neighborhoods but it's inland, and not nice. The apartments and houses are all pretty unsightly. And, all it is comprised of is industrial places, crowded streets and chains. Chains that you thought were only in the midwest actually have outposts here. And, some parts of it can be quite dangerous. I think the only notable thing about this area is the giant Ikea, but unless you live in one of the bay cities, this isn't even a reason to venture in. Not much else to really say about it.
