"Eh"
Primarily a residential area, with not much in terms of a local scene- not many independently run stores or chains. It has a history rich in community activism, including one case that included the community suing the EPA to keep neighboring communities from dumping sewage water into the Anacostia River. Like most of the rest of the area, Kingman Park is constantly striving to be on the up and up. While not quite as bad as some of its sister neighborhoods, the area still has a very long way to go. But at this point, it is only a couple chain stores away from being so.

Kingman Park is home to approximately 8,029 residents and is located in the northeast park of the city near RFK Memorial Stadium. The neighborhood is within the boundaries of Constitution Avenue N.E., 15th Street N.E., Benning Road N.E. and Oklahoma Avenue N.E.. The average sales price for homes sold in 2010 was $264,603 with 40% of the homes in the neighborhood being owner occupied. Most homes are traditional attached row house style homes that are found in many areas of the city. Many have parking at the rear of the homes which is accessed by shared rear alleys.
Residents will find numerous schools here including Miner Elementary School, Friendship PCS-Blow Pierce and Elio Hine Middle School. Benning Road offers residents a majority of restaurant options available here, however it appears that it is mostly fast food. Shopping is challenging in Kingman Park and most residents will want to venture into other neighborhoods to do most of their shopping. There are 10 places of worship within the neighborhood. Access to Metro Bus stops is excellent with numerous stops located on various streets. Residents will enjoy the Rosedale Recreation Center as well as Anacostia Park Section F along Oklahoma Avenue N.E.. Car owners will appreciate having a gas station located within the neighborhood as well.
Recent crime statistics indicate that this is a relatively safe neighborhood with most crime being property crimes. As always research the most recent crime statistics and make an informed decision as to the crime risk before moving into any neighborhood.

"Not in my neighborhood!"
Kingman Park is a place where class warfare is very much in evidence, where people who want to be left alone like to live. In essence, you can’t do much of anything in the Kingman Park neighborhood because they will protest, and they have carried this so far as to create a disadvantage to themselves and others. One might say they are part of the reason DC has such horrible traffic.
Economically, they are middle class blacks, and the neighborhood is still fairly safe. Schools are decent: there are two charter schools which in turn improve the public schools around them due to competition. Activism has kept the neighborhood safe, because less desirable influences have been unable to gain a foothold here. Housing prices are reasonable, making this a reasonably good place to live without the sky high price.
As much as activism can be good, it has come at a price: there is little retail or food service in Kingman Park, in spite of its proximity to a major stadium and multiple parks. Yet there is a nice place to walk along the river bank. Walkability, it seems, only goes so far. Residents have to leave the area to purchase most things they might need or want.

In fact, they were so successful that they got the entire project shut down, limiting service to other needy areas in the process. They have also managed to prevent the construction of a much needed freeway route because they do not want it going through their neighborhood.
Their political power seems to stem from the ability of the Kingman Park Civic Association to rally other groups around to opposed growth and change. Together they successfully drove the Washington Redskins out of the District and into Maryland, prevented a theme park being built nearby and rallied the EPA to increase their efforts to protect the already nasty Anacostia River.
In recent years, they have prevented a road race being held at the nearby RFK stadium, and a boarding school being built to serve the needs of underprivileged children. They even kept the Washington Nationals from setting off fireworks at the end of their games.
Their rallying cry seems to be, “Do what you want, but not in our neighborhood.”
