Michigan Park

Not much noteworthy about Michigan Park, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Countless other neighborhoods around the area would be glad to see an element of stability instead of countless crime reports. And like many other neighborhoods around the District, community spirit is at the heart of these streets. In this case its rewards seem to have paid off in the form of a safe neighborhood with affordable housing, and minimal complaints. When the worst aspect about where you live is that there is only one playground or the occasional bout of noise, it's safe to say you are in a good neighborhood. Steady appears to have won the race at Michigan Park.

Michigan Park is a residential neighborhood in the northeast section of the city along the Maryland border. Eastern Avenue N.E., South Dakota Avenue NE., Gallatin Street N.E. and Shepherd Street N.E. define the limits of the neighborhood. The combined North Michigan Park and Michigan Park have approximately 233,796 residents with 85% of the homes being owner occupied.

Recreational facilities include North Michigan Park Recreation Center and Therrell Smith School of Dance. Green space can be found in a neighborhood park adjacent to the HCS Pediatrics Center, Fort Circle Park and Barnard Hill Park. Stores and restaurants can be found in the neighborhood but many will want to travel outside of Michigan Park for more variety. Families with children will find St, Anselm's Abbey School within the neighborhood. Medical care is nearby and may be too close for some due to the noise and traffic.

As with North Michigan Park, most crime appears to be thefts from vehicles. As always, check the recent crime statistics prior to making a decision to move here or any other neighborhood. There are many commercial uses of the land within this neighborhood and some may not like the amount of traffic here.

Michigan Park: a nice, middle class neighborhood with reasonably priced housing and quiet streets. It is close to the Maryland line. While many nearby neighborhoods are primarily residential, that is not as true with Michigan Park. The Roman Catholic Church has significant influence, because there is a religious community in its boundaries, with the requisite chapel. At certain times of day, you can hear the church bells. Catholic University is close by, giving you many options for quality child care courtesy of the students. Also a result of the university, there are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores near the school, which are a long walk or a short bus ride away. Additional shopping is just on the other side of the Maryland line.
One advantage of having the Catholic Church having such a presence is the really low crime rate: in fact, even petty theft is fairly rare here. Like much of the surrounding areas, Michigan Park is made up of a lot of single family homes with yards. There is also a good deal of green space. Schools are reasonable, though many residents can afford private school. Lastly, if you get sick here it is a short drive to the hospital at the center of the neighborhood.

Michigan Park is a small neighborhood in northeast Washington. Founded during the era when the District of Columbia was still strictly segregated, it was distinct from its neighbor, North Michigan Park, in that it was the white neighborhood, while North Michigan Park was exclusively African American. Also, some people confuse Michigan Park with Brookland, its other nearby neighbor. However, each is generally recognized as its own distinct neighborhood.
One of the most distinctive buildings in Michigan Park is St. Anselm’s Abbey, a Roman Catholic monastery attached to the nearby Catholic University. In fact, it was Catholic U that brought Michigan Park into being. Students move here at the end of the 19th century, just after Catholic University officially opened.
Another attraction in Michigan Park is the Turkey Thicket Playground, a fun and fabulous place for children to run and play. Families tend to flock to this playground during the spring and summer months.
Finally, excellent health care is nearby in Providence Hospital, a medical institution that has served Washington since President Lincoln established it at the beginning of the Civil War.
The lovely single family homes in this rather affluent area tend to sell for around $350 to $600 thousand dollars, making them attractive to upper middle class buyers looking for solid construction and tree lined streets.
