"A busy mixed residential and low commercial section outside of downtown Newark. Mediocre"
Lower Broadway is located minutes from Downtown Newark close to important landmarks including Rutgers Business school, Newark bear Stadium, where major rail and bus lines are easy accessible. Lower Broadway carries the reputation along with Newark as a spot ridden for crime, junkies and filth. Broadway as always trashed with debris pilled up on the street, the buildings are relatively ugly, old and rundown with no revitalization in sight. The business options are, ahh ok as they consist of furniture stores, Dominican bars, several check cashing and travel agencies and bodegas with so and so quality. The working class is of endangered species here as mostly bums, drug infested fiends of all ages make this their home. Although there is a school, Barringer Unsuccess Academy located on crane street. Its NOT the place to raise your kids. The streets are very noisy 24/7 with all sources of passing vehicles including tractor trailers, load Honda hoopties and police cars racing like its NASCAR drag racing, and buses. The locals don't get you the neighborly feel as they are very unfriendly. The junkies only talk to you to hustle you for pocket change otherwise they will mean mug you looking for a fight.
On the positive note, there is constant police presence keeping the criminal element at check. On a good day Broadway is a 25 so minute walk to downtown newark and a 10 minute work to Branch brook park if you can pass though the HOT bed of 7th ave. Transportation is very convenient given the different buslines running though Broadway leading to Newark Penn Station, Irvington, Bloomfield, etc, as well as the Broad St train station with trains leading to Hoboken, New York city, as well as the suburbs.
