"Eclectic, Small Town Community"

Multnomah Village is a cool, eclectic community located in Portland’s West Hills. The town center is located off of SW Capitol Highway, and here you will find all kinds of great stores, coffee shops and little unique bakeries and restaurants as well as everything else you may need. This is a very family friendly neighborhood, yet singles and retirees love it here as well as it has something for everyone.

While there are certainly some nice homes in Multnomah Village, there are also a few that could benefit from a major overhaul making some neighborhoods look less than desirable. If renting is more your thing, apartments are can be found here as well.

Many residents take advantage of the Multnomah Community Center that offers art and music classes and is a popular gathering place. Gabriel Park is also very popular and includes a skateboard park that gets quite a bit of use when the weather is nice.

If you depend on public transportation, you won’t find a rail service here, but there is bus service into Portland as well as to nearby Lewis & Clark College and Portland Community College.

"Feels Like a Charming Small Town"

Southwest Portland's Multnomah neighborhood is a charming and quaint community that feels very much like a small town. Because Multnomah is also the name of the county, many residents say that they live in the Multnomah Village area.

Multnomah Village serves as the heart of this community, where residents can find locally owned shops and restaurants. This is a great place to spend an afternoon looking for gifts or souvenirs, especially during the holidays. There are several historic buildings in Multnomah, including a Masonic Lodge that's now the Lucky Labrador Public House (a very popular pub), an old school that's now an art center, and the popular Marco's Cafe, housed in a turn-of-the-century building.

Balancing out these fun commercial areas are plenty of green spaces. Families love Gabriel Park, which offers many acres of trails, playgrounds, and sports fields. You'll also see many flyers around the neighborhood for classes at the Southwest Community Center, Sprout Academy preschool, and Multnomah Arts Center.

Most of the houses here were built following World War II; there are also a number of condos, townhouses, and apartments built in the 1990s and 2000s. Homes tend to be surprisingly affordable here. If you want a very walkable neighborhood, stick to the streets closest to the Village center, which tend to be the most pedestrian-friendly.
Pros
  • Lots of green spaces
  • Affordable homes
  • Community spirit
  • Unique stores
Cons
  • Parking can be tough at the Village

"A Feel-Good Historic Place"

Multnomah Village may feel out of the way for many Portlanders, but it is definitely worth a trip. Although it may feel remote, the fact is that this area is really only a 15 minute drive from downtown. This area has more than 100 different little businesses including art galleries, antique stores, and unique restaurants. Many people venture to this area to go to the independent bookstore Annie Bloom's.

There is a lot of community spirit in this area. In fact, every year there is a big neighborhood street fair that includes a parade. All of the local vendors offer discounts and street sales. Multnomah even has its own weekly newspaper called the Multnomah Village Post.

My mother takes classes at Multnomah Art Center. They offer a surprisingly large array of classes for a very reasonable price. This is a nice hub for the community. There is also a large park called Gabriel Park, which offers tennis, trails and a nice playground.

Most of the homes are pretty contemporary in style and you can also find a lot of townhomes in this area. Prices tend to be quite affordable.
Pros
  • Community spirit
  • Unique stores
Cons
  • Feels out of the way
