"Horses!"

Shadow Hills is relatively unknown as far as Los Angeles communities go. It has been underdeveloped in the past because it's pretty much in the mountains above Burbank and is, apparently, hard to build on. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of Shadow Hills is zoned for equestrian activity. There are horses everywhere! Pretty much everyone who lives in Shadow Hills has horses. There are trails all over and it's really just got a farmy vibe to it.

The houses are nice but nothing really gargantuan and they are mostly all 60's style houses. I call them Brady bunch ranch houses. But, it's a really lovely and peaceful community. And, it's beautiful. This is definitely a place to retire if you're into wide, open spaces and riding your horse to the corner market. There aren't any restaurants, really, and although Burbank isn't terribly far, it would be a major pain if you went back and forth every day.

"Horse Country"

The appropriately named Shadow Hills is probably one of the best kept secrets of the Valley. If you like ranch living, are a horse person who loves a leafy arid area to ride horse or own lots of dogs this is definitely the place to live.

The community here is older than its surrounding areas and you will find lots of old veterans of Korea and even WW2 here, retired and relatively well-off. Its nicer than Chatworth, much more hilly and also much closer to Burbank and the rest of Los Angeles. It is a pretty large sprawling area but only has a population of about ten thousand people, with lots of elbow room. It is definitely the kind of place that Ronald Reagan types will like—ranch living but not too far from Hollywood.

The schools in the area are great as well, with Notre Dame Prep not far from its bordors and lots of choices nearby—although most of the residents are on the tail end of the child rearing years. It is also very safe. Of the four murders reported in the area since 2007, three seem more likely to be bodies that were dumped in the area rather than Shadow Hills residents. The relatively secluded area does mean that you are a little on your own, of course. And you will get some non-human visitors every so often, but if you keep some dogs that should be enough to scare most pests away.

Put simply, it is the sort of place that I might like if I were more of an outdoorsy type.
