Takoma

If you like a place where the neighbors are friendly and the politics active, you’ll love Takoma. This is the area that stopped the Beltway from being built closer in, cutting the community in half. It is also a great place to be if you are a vegetarian or a liberal, as there are plenty of appropriate hangouts for those of that persuasion. Notably, there is a farmer’s market which is there every week during the summer months, helping you to eat local and purchase healthy options for your dinner table.
Like Chevy Chase or Georgetown, Takoma has a bunch of really great restaurants. Unlike those neighborhoods however, they aren’t ridiculously expensive, just good hometown cooking. Most things you need will be in walking distance here. In addition, Takoma has its own Metro station, so if you work closer to downtown getting there won’t be a major problem.
Takoma has a really strong sense of community, and is very safe to walk, even at night. In fact, the night life is significant here, due to the bars and restaurants available—and the bars aren’t trashy, either, but a nice place to hang out if that’s your idea of a good time.

Takoma is a neighborhood of approximately 4,884 residents located in the northwest section of the city. In 2010 the average price for a home for sale her was $406,508 and approximately 54% were owner occupied. The neighborhood is generally defined as the area east of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center and is bordered by Georgia Avenue N.W, the Maryland state line and Aspen Street N.W. Takoma Park, Maryland is adjacent to the neighborhood.

Residents of Takoma find that Takoma Education Campus and Stayer University are the only schools in the neighborhood. Residents will find 8 places to worship along with numerous restaurants and limited shopping available. The Takoma Metro Station is located in the neighborhood along with numerous bus stops. Recreational activities can be found at Takoma Elementary Recreation Center. This neighborhood also has the Takoma Park Library as well. With the exception of the Takoma Elementary Center, there are no other green spaces although many of the streets are tree lined.

The future here is unknown with the closing of the adjacent Walter Reed Army Hospital, although my bet is that things in the long run will be great once a new use is found for the property that housed Walter Reed Army Hospital. This property will be extremely valuable, especially due to its proximity to a Metro Station. I am sure private developers would love to get their hands on this property!
