"'Five Feet High and Rising'—and then some"
As a former farm girl, I love the TSU area. Talk about green! But of course it would be.
Tennessee State University started in 1912 as an Industrial and Agricultural College for Negroes. (That was the word back then.) The college’s evolution to a full-fledged land grant university is a convoluted tale that embodies all the racial tensions of the South.
While faculty, staff and students at the university have done award-winning research in a number of disciplines—ask about the new planet one of their astronomers helped discover—TSU does still maintain an excellent school of agriculture, with research farms north of Dr. Walter S. Davis Boulevard.
And therein lies a story.
When the flood took Nashville by surprise in May, agri faculty, staff and students rushed to try to save their animals. One professor was attempting to save some guard dog pups on the goat farm when suddenly the water was up around his chest. He got stranded on a haystack with the pups, and wound up being rescued by the president of the university in a flat-bottomed canoe.
Before it was all over, the goat farm wound up under an estimated 15-20 feet of water. The professor lost over a third of his herd, setting back research by five to ten years. That old Johnny Cash song, “Five Feet High and Rising,” doesn’t even begin to describe the situation.
When I was on the TSU campus for a function in late May, I saw no signs of flood damage. But I never made it north of Dr. WSD Boulevard to the area that had the most trouble.
MTA routes 19 and 29 hit the edge of the TSU main campus. The university also runs shuttles for students to the downtown area.

"TSU and More."
TSU is a good area to live in for college students and for those individuals who are just starting out on their own. Not to far away from the Tennessee State University is Hadley Park. The big park is a great park to take the children to as well as the pets in your home. There are a number of entrances to the park as well as a community center.
The interstate 40 is not to far away from TSU and this allows you easy access to numerous points of interest in Nashville. When looking for a place to eat, the local Wendy's is a good choice as well as numerous other local restaurants that are owned and operated by residents of Nashville. Jefferson Street and D.B. Todd Blvd is not to far away and offers you the chance to drive directly into downtown without having to get on the interstate.
Located not to far away is Fisk University and Meharry Medical School. The Nashville General Hospital is not to far away and is not the greatest hospital in all of Nashville but a good choice when you need to get to a hospital and need to get there fast.
The overall neighborhood is good when compared to other neighborhoods. Quite and peaceful is how I would rate this neighborhood.

"Pretty campus"
The Tennessee State University main campus is a very pretty park-like setting that is also close to Meharry Medical College and Fisk University, making for a nice university corridor.
(There is also the Tennessee State University downtown Avon Williams campus, which is located in downtown proper.)
TSU's main campus is close to downtown, Germantown, and Metro Center. The area surrounding TSU is a nice residential area, with mainly lower priced homes. Many of the students live in dorms on campus, but some rent off campus. Apartments near by can run from $600/month and higher.
