Is South Chicago in Chicago a good place to live for families with kids?

I don't really like South Chicago. I'm a single dude, and I think it's a bit too far away and not the safest place to live. You can do better.

South Chicago is in the midst of a period of development, which should change things quite a bit for the area. For now, it's a very affordable area, but is a little questionable as far as safety goes in certain parts. I think it's a great spot for young families looking for a starter home.
