Is the South Chicago neighborhood in Chicago safe?

Actually, considering the state of many of the homes in South Chicago, it's surprisingly safe. I say this because it seems like whenever you have a neighborhood with a lot of run down homes in need of repairs, there tends to be a ton of crime, but South Chicago is actually not too bad.
