Van Ness Ave
"No real reason to go"
This street runs almost straight down the center of San Francisco downtown. While having such a central locale, the street gives no other reason to visit, and mainly serves a purpose as just a street. Not only lacking a reason to visit, there are areas which are downright unpleasant to venture into. Simply not recommended aside from possibly the very northern parts which lead into Fort Mason- an old naval base which now serves as a public park.
Ofarrell St
"A rustic street with some great places to drink"
This street runs near Union Square and is a street mostly of purpose. However, it hosts some great Irish pubs for those people looking for that kind of thing, and would definitely be a place to go if you're looking for a drink. A mostly pleasant street which serves its purpose and has plenty of places to stay or go to at night- though can be quite the opposite if one ventures westward.

Mission St
"A very interesting street"
This area has a lot of up-and-coming real estate and a lot of hip and interesting places. Visiting here will show you a lot of the things you hear about San Francisco, and a lot you didn't know about. This area is one of the more diverse that I have visited, but the street covers a lot of ground and gives you a great deal of things to see- recommended for younger types looking into San Francisco.

North Point St
"Pleasant and scenic"
This street runs along the very north tip of San Francisco, around the Fisherman's Wharf- a very well known and lovely area of the city. With lots to see and do for pretty much anyone visiting for any reason, this shows off the most beautiful parts of the city and gives you plenty to do when you aren't just seeing the sights.

Geary St
"A mostly nice street near Union Square"
This street is mostly pleasant, especially towards the east and Union Square area and has plenty of places to go for a drink at night, or places to shop around Union Square during the day. I wouldn't recommend going too far west, but that's true for most streets in this area, and it's a nice street for the most part.

Columbus Ave
"An interesting street, a good walk"
Columbus Avenue runs diagonally down northeast San Francisco- I don't know why it does, but it makes for a pleasant walk if you go from the Fisherman's Wharf area to Union Square or the main downtown area. The street feels somewhat old-fashioned but has some good places to eat as well as plenty of stores geared towards tourists. It's a safe and pleasant walk which will show you a good chunk of the city.

Broadway St
"Runs through San Francisco's 'Red Light District'"
This street it somewhat interesting, but I found it just mostly scary. It runs through the "Red Light District" of the city, harboring strip clubs and the like, offering lots of creepy guys to tell you that you need to come in. Has some clubs and bars worth going to, and the craziest hostel I've ever been to, the Green Tortoise- which I would highly recommend for the partying traveler.

Haight St
"A neat and historic place"
Haight Street is the home of the old hippie culture of the 60's- though nowadays mostly commercialized, it is still an interesting and fun street to visit, and definitely one of the places you must see if you visit San Francisco. Full of interesting shops, places to eat, and also people, this part of the city has more flavor than most and begs to be seen by the tourist.

Market St
"Runs through the heart of the city"
Market Street shows off a lot of what San Francisco has to offer. It runs through the very heart of the city and separates a few distinct parts like the Castro, South of Market, and Union Square, all of which seem to be right around this historic street. Walking it will show you much of San Francisco, even down to the end at Haight Ashbury.

Mason St
"A mix of all of the city"
I stayed on Mason St. near Market more than a few times at a hostel when visiting. This street is the closest thing to home I have at San Francisco, and I think it is a mix of lots of things San Francisco has to offer. Between both the better and worse parts of the city, the street shows off an idea of what the city has to offer.
