"A reflection of the state"
Unfortunately, like all of Michigan, Kalamazoo is having its economic problems. However, the city as a whole is still a great place that has a nice homely feel. With Kalamazoo it really is dependent upon where you live in the city as to how your experience will be. If you live near Portage, you will have a lot more shopping options than if you lived near the outskirts such as D-Ave. However, people tend to be pretty friendly no matter where you go.
While Kalamazoo does have its problems, it is still a great city for anyone to get their start.

"Great place for everyone!"
What a great city! This is one of THE BEST places to raise a family. Amazing sense of community as well. The biggest issue I have with the city is the issue of parking and traffic during the school year. Because of Indiana University, this town is jumping when school is in session but is completely peaceful and quiet during the summer.
Lake Monroe is a great relaxation spot and having the University nearby makes it a great town for sporting events. The city is also ALWAYS ranked as one of the hot spots for retirees! I will definitely be looking here to raise my family when the time comes.

"Busy -- Not for those needing quiet"
Personally, I loved living off of S. Westnedge. There were a lot of things close by and there was a good neighborhood vibe. I lived right next to I94 so the noise pollution was double what it is on any other part of Westnedge. However, this wasn't really a problem for me, but for those seeking peace and quiet this is definitely not the area. Also, as with a lot of main street areas, there are the occasional drug problems, however it is not as prominent as you might think being on a main road. Overall great living location if you're either just starting out on your own, or just beginning to start a family. The closeness of shops, schools, and grocery stores will make things easier on the budget!
