"Great Hub"
My section of Geary is great as a hub for an individual or couple. It's easy to reach most parts of the city from this location because the 4 or 5 bus lines that run in all directions from here. In terms of amenities, you've got two cheap decent restaurants in Tommy's Joynt and Mel's (I love this place), a movie theater, a 24 hour fitness... what more could you want.
You're a short bus ride away from the Mission, North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf, Richmond, or the Financial District. A quick ride down Van Ness takes you right to Market where you can hop on a Muni train or get on BART.
Being that we're on the edge of the Tenderloin you see quite a few homeless and the area is generally dirty, but it means lower rents. My advice is to pick a bum and befriend him - he/she will make sure that you're not bothered. If you want night life you've got Polk street with a ton of fun bars and restaurants, and if you want culture you're a short bus ride/walk to Japantown.
There can be a lot of traffic on Van Ness during rush hours, but normally it's not a problem and there's parking at the Cathedral Hill Hotel. The guests can sometimes make walks home interesting - I've been propositioned from the windows of naked guests.
All in all it's a great hub for a busy life, but not a place to raise a family.
