"Small beach town in the middle of a big city"
I've lived on Narragansett Ave since 1994, and I love it. Ocean Beach feels like a small beach town, but it's right in the middle of San Diego, so you get the best of both worlds.
My street is 2 blocks from the main drag in OB, Newport Ave, where the bulk of bars & restaurants are. On my corner is a great store, Olive Tree Market, that has standard convenience store fare, plus a great deli. On one end of the street are cliffs overlooking the ocean, with a staircase that takes you down the the water's edge.
It can be a little loud, and it's a mix of single family homes and apartment buildings. Lots of dogs & cats. Parking on the street can be tight.
