"Not Quite Historic"

Casa Linda is an older neighborhood in Dallas that really shows its age in some places, though in recent years they have begun to update it. Most homes in the area were built in the 1950s, but unlike some of the similar-aged neighborhoods nearby, many of the houses really show their age. While in some cases these older homes are well-kept, in many they are becoming a bit of an eyesore.

The main retail staple in the area, Casa Linda Shopping Center, has been on the decline for more than a decade. However, a recent makeover of its exterior seems to have given it a bit of a lift. Store interiors also feel old, but are generally well kept up. The one thing there is no lack of in Casa Linda and neighboring streets is restaurants. From the historic and original Highland Park Café to chains such as Chili’s and Schlotzkys, residents can find their fare of choice with ease.

Located on the southeast side of White Rock Lake, Casa Linda has plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. While the residential parts of the neighborhood are quiet and low-traffic (both car and foot traffic, as many of the streets lack sidewalks), the larger streets bordering the neighborhood tend to get pretty congested during rush hours. While there are certainly some diamonds in the rough in this neighborhood, it has yet to begin turning over like many of its neighbors.

"Quiet, Low Key Neighborhood"

Highland Meadows is a quiet, low-key neighborhood in Dallas that feels less crowded and more natural than many parts of town. Located on the edge of the greater Lake Highlands neighborhood, Highland Meadows contains both single-family homes and a number of apartment and townhome complexes. With plenty of trees and creeks, many homes in the neighborhood benefit from large back yards, creek views and a sense of seclusion not available in many parts of Dallas.

Families considering Highland Meadows should take school districts into consideration when selecting their home, as the neighborhood is divided among the struggling Dallas ISD and the much more stable Richardson ISD. Retail in the area is nothing to write home about, but residents of Highland Meadows don’t have to go far to find anything they might need. While the single-family subdivisions are generally safer areas in the neighborhood, there is no need for excessive concern about crime.

As for recreation, Highland Meadows offers easy access to most of Lake Highlands’ attractions, the most notable being White Rock Lake. While not within walking/biking distance, the lake is only a short drive away, as is the Arboretum, another beautiful destination on a nice day. Overall, the neighborhood offers a variety of residential options with all the amenities you’d expect in a big city, while still maintaining a smaller town feel.

"Excellent Neighborhood for Young Families"

The Highland Hills neighborhood is an excellent location for couples thinking about starting a family or families with young children. In the last ten years, the neighborhood has turned over significantly, replacing older homeowners with young couples and families. It is a very safe neighborhood in an excellent school district (Richardson ISD), and the community is welcoming and easy to get involved in.

Highland Hills includes both older homes built in the 1950s and a newer subdivision that includes some newer and larger homes. Many homes have been updated or renovated by former or current owners. The neighborhood used to be a pecan orchard, so there is plenty of shade in the hot Texas summers. Children can often be seen running around front yards, and families walking pets and strollers are a regular evening occurrence.

The neighborhood is convenient to a variety of activities and retail. White Rock Lake is minutes away, where residents often go to walk/run/bike around the lake, take their dog to the dog park, or simply picnic and enjoy the scenery. The Arboretum is also nearby, a must-see in Dallas. The neighborhood has easy access to a number of grocery stores, parks and local neighborhood businesses, from bakeries to auto repair.

Part of the larger Lake Highlands neighborhood, Highland Hills has a great family vibe. From rooting on the Wildcat football team to neighborhood block parties and local fundraisers, it’s a great place for young families to raise their children and connect with their neighbors.
