This road was designed to impress through it's turn of the century mansions, a median planted with trees and its unfenced lush front yards. This street puts you a few blocks from Prospect Park, shopping on Church Avenue, and the dense family neighborhoods of Ocean Parkway and Midwood. There are not many bargain properties on Albemarle Road, but if you can swing it, this is a great family neighborhood.

While parts of this Fort Greene Avenue are quieter (the ones further away from the subway of course), most of this avenue is pleasantly bustling without the grime and chaos of other busy areas. The houses are big and well kept along the entire Avenue and it is within walking distance to many universities and Downtown Brooklyn. This would be a great Avenue to have the space and quiet of Brooklyn but the proximity to urban life, if you can afford it.

Unless it is the day of the Mermaid Parade or the hot dog eating contest this avenue is a lot quieter than other main drags in Coney Island but it still has all of the sagging architecture and high crime of the rest of the area. There has been a lot of back and forth about the closing of Astro Land and the opening of an indoor theme park and condos, so you could take a chance that buildings on this Avenue will get a face lift and more interesting businesses will pop up, as it is right now, this Avenue is pretty bleak.

I would only recommend this as a short term place to live or a place for someone who has no aspirations beyond keggers on the roof. Most of McKibben is warehouse space turned loft apartments for folks who don't believe in washing their hair. The loft apartments are very unfinished, my friend lived in one where the two bedrooms didn't have ceilings they were just cheap walls separating them from the kitchen. Perhaps this would be good for a single person or couple in a studio, but walking around 265 McKibben, there were typically tons of people crammed in every apartment. There is obvious tension between the loft dwellers and other Bushwick residents and it makes it very unfriendly to walk around the neighborhood.

This area is great to brag about at parties. Van Dyke St. is Classic Red Hook because although you are trapped without a car, you'll live within steps of the waterfront, pier 41 and Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. The latest season of the Real World was taped at a house on Van Dyke St. and it has added to the buzz about development in this neighborhood.

I viewed an apartment on St. Mark's Place and was very sad when I did not get it because I fell in love with the area. This short little street has all of my favorite parts of park slope. The brownstones that dot it have a lot more character than neighboring blocks and it is within walking distance to the busy Atlantic/Pacific transit hub while being tucked away enough to feel safe and neighborly.

My friends recently bought an apartment here after they got married and they are very happy with it. Their whole neighborhood is couples and families and although they live in an apartment, they are surrounded by row houses with big front yards. They are an interracial couple and feel comfortable in this diverse neighborhood containing many Jewish, South Asian, and Latino families.

Near Flatbush Ave this is a busy Ave safe to walk home at night, close to bars, shops and the B, Q subway. Closer to the BQE and DeKalb Ave there are parks and more row houses than apartments. Steer clear of the Atlantic Ave area because although it is near the Atlantic/Pacific hub it is gross and deserted.

Eleventh Street runs from the lofts and warehouses of Gowonas to Prospect Park West. The West Side of Prospect Park is one of the safer parts of the park to live near and although the street gets parked up quickly, it is very accessible by car, subway or walking. I think this street is a good compromise in distance between the F train along 9th Street and the bars and restaurants of the 5th Ave/5th St area without the noise of either.

I have been to this street to visit Cafe Grumpy. I was living in Manhattan at the time and happy to have a quiet Sunday in a less crowded neighborhood. If you live close to Manhattan Ave you will find it busier and easier to step out of your apartment right into a restaurant or bar. Even a few blocks away from these Avenues it is a lot quieter but still dotted with interesting cafes and shops. If you want something lush and dotted with trees, this street is not for you. Think pavement.
