Where is a good area to live in D.C. if commuting to Ft. McNair and the Pentagon?

I want to live within walking distance to a metro and a bus line that will go to Ft. McNair. I'm looking to rent a 2-3 bedroom apartment/condo/townhome for my family with small kids.
