Washington Heights, New York City - good public transportation options?

It's not great. Pretty much only the 1 runs through Washington Heights. The 1 isn't slow, but to get downtown, it takes about an hour unless you transfer to the 2 or 3 express trains at 96th. Sometimes you get lucky and the transfer is immediate. And, sometimes you don't lucky, and it takes an eon to get out of there.
