Any tips from locals for finding an apartment in West Portal, San Francisco?

I used to recommend Padmapper for finding apartments, but now that they don't have a deal with Craigslist any more they seem like they barely have any listings. Craigslist has more listings but they don't have a mapping function, so it sort of sucks.

I would get the address off Craigslist and then check it out on Google maps or maybe even Padmapper, if you can. Otherwise it is back to the bad old days of depending on brokers. Ick!
