"Better than what it was..."
I lived on this street on and off from 1985 to 2007, and in the early years two specific blocks were infested with drug dealing and car theft. Most of the bad element moved on, but there may be a few blocks in the vicinty that may still be involved in some kind of shady activity. Weekends are loud depending on the block you are on. I noticed the closer you are to Boulevard East, the quieter it is... although again in the summertime, it's not much different.
Rents have skyrocketed ridiculously, especially for apartment buildings that are not maintained that well. I was lucky to live in a rent controlled apartment, until the building was sold into seperate condos. I was forced to move and live in a quieter area.
The area is pretty safe to walk through during the daytime. It is recommended to be wary after midnight hours, other than that it's fine. Neighbors are friendly however. If you can get along with them, then you are good.
The street is close to lots of grocery stores, schools, church, movie theater, lunch/dinner spots, transportation, and it runs into Bergenline Ave... the main commerce avenue.
