"A fun campus to visit"
Stanford University is world-renown for a reason, and it's not just because of the academia. It is a great place to visit for an afternoon. The employees at the visitor center are very helpful and informative, and there is public parking. You can walk around the campus, enjoy the architecture, and visit the sculpture garden. It is not unusual to see other tourists there. Picnic tables abound and the campus is perfectly manicured.
The biggest downfall is that you have to pay hourly for parking. And, like most college campuses, many of the parking lots are not opened to the public. But overall, it offers a great visitor experience.
