"Downtown living with a small town feel"
Brooks St is the center piece of the city's major revitalization plan. New condominiums have been built in the past couple of years and they sell or rent at a fraction of the cost to those in nearby Destin. Local storefronts are being refurbished and the city is about to break ground on a multi-million dollar project that will add parking, stores, and apartments to the one-block area of Hwy 98 known as downtown Fort Walton Beach. Three of the top restaurants in the Pensacola-Fort Walton-Destin area are located on or near Brooks street and are within a minute walk of the newly built condominiums I mentioned. There are also bars, a pizza pub, barbecue, Thai food, stores, a hair salon, a dance studio, and a ballet studio all located on Brooks street and within a minute walk for Brooks street residents. Lastly, Fort Walton Beach landing, a beautifully maintained city park, is located in the center of Brooks street. The park overlooks the Okaloosa sound and is the site of several annual events, including the Billy Bowlegs Festival.
