"Big buildings. Lots of green"
Battery Park City is an interesting development because it was built on top of a landfill but you would never know it. It's pretty beautiful around the park; and, the park has the most unadulterated stretch of grass in Manhattan outside of Central Park. It's a cool park with a view of the Statue of Liberty and Chambers street runs right into it.
The street starts on the Esplandade (the park) and the two buildings on the corners are luxury high rises that are a pretty penny. They units on the west side must have an incredible view, though. The two blocks leading up to West street where the neighborhood ends are comprised largely of luxury buildings like this though I doubt any others have the Hudson view. The rest of the street that isn't taken up by apartment buildings is taken up by Stuyvesant High School. Stuy High is the best public school in New York City. It's very prestigious and if you have to send your kid to public school, this is the one so you had better start looking for a place in the neighborhood. It's large and pretty and there's even a walk bridge that was built for students so they have to cross West. It has been featured in a lot of movies and counts for Nobel prizes in its alumni -- that's pretty insane for a public school in New York.
Chambers isn't a happening street to live on and it's really busy during the day. There's no neighborhood vibe to it, a lot of day traffic and no bar or restaurant scene. But, Chambers has a subway stop on it and there are about 92 acres of green right on it which is more than most neighborhoods can say in this city.
