Is Clinton (Hells Kitchen) in New York City a safe neighborhood?

Eh, it's ok. It's not a terrible neighborhood, but I don't trust it. For one, it seems like the only people in Hell's Kitchen are lost tourists which are easy targets. And, there's no bar or restaurant scene to speak of outside of the tourist haunts that trickle over from Times Square. With no scene, there's no people, and that makes it kind of scary at night. Walking up anything west of 8th after midnight is an exercise in heightened awareness, for sure. It's not terrible, it's just pretty creepy.
