"Collier Heights Proper"

The Collier Heights neighborhood is the first community designed by an African-American. It is source of pride and renown because of this distinction.

The neighborhood sits between I-20 and I-285 for convenient access to the airport, shopping, and area attractions. It’s an easy drive on I-20 to the downtown area, historic black universities, and West End neighborhood.

The homes were built between the late 1940s and 50s and still retain their stately beauty among rolling hills and mature trees. They are well maintained and the neighborhood is mostly quiet. It gets congested on Holmes Dr which leads to Bankhead Hwy, MLK Jr. Dr, and I-20. There are several churches on that road too which can cause a lot of traffic on the weekend.

Over the years the neighborhood has declined. Traffic congestion from the highway brought in a bad element for a while but neighborhood patrols and cooperation from the police has stemmed much of the crime.

The school in the area include both public and private. Several prominent and historic public servants lived in the area so there is a huge source of pride.

"Historic Atlanta suburb"

Collier Heights is a historic neighborhood located in southwest Atlanta. It is just minutes away from Interstate 20 (making it easily accessible to local attractions) . The neighborhood has quite a bit of rich history; as it was built during the civil rights era, and was home to many middle-class African Americana's who sought suburban living during that time. Collier Heights has delighted in being the resting place for residents such as Cynthia McKenny (former US Congresswoman), Martin Luther King Sr., and a host of other well-established African Americans.

The houses in this area are just beautiful. Most of them are fairly large and have spacious yards, with lovely shade trees. Some of the housing structures are rather unique, unlike many other popular “cookie-cutter” Atlanta neighborhoods. There are several community gardens and parks nearby, including the recently revitalized Collier Heights Park. This park is the first park in the state of Georgia to have a completed LifeTrail fitness course. The trail has several fitness stations that are geared toward promoting fitness and healthy living for the neighborhoods senior citizens.

The Collier Heights neighborhood has certainly gone through its ups and downs, and there have been several developmental initiatives set in place to help bring Collier Heights back to life. There is a lot of community pride and effort that goes into neighborhood revitalization. Residents of this neighborhood should be commended for their continued dedicated.

"Close to Airport"

Collier Heights in Atlanta Georgia is located very close to Interstates 285 and 20. The location is ideal for getting around the large metropolitan area and accessing both Hartsfield Jackson Airport and the smaller Fulton County Airport- Brown Field. Greater access is also available, as a result, to downtown, midtown, and other areas to enjoy shopping, dining, and the many cultural events that are always occurring in the Greater Atlanta area.

But sometimes access comes at a price. The neighborhoods proximity to the airport and major thoroughfares makes it a lot more trafficked and more noisy than would be ideal. Traffic in Atlanta is never really good, and being close to the access point for two major interstates makes the traffic situation that much worse.

The Collier Heights neighborhood is okay. There is certainly nothing to write home about. The neighborhood is mid to low income, and the resale value for properties in the area are dismal. There are decent schools in the area and access to public transportation and local conveniences. If you are not from the Collier Heights area, then there is certainly nothing that will draw you there.
Pros
  • major interstate access
  • access to public transportatton
  • decent schools

  • poor resale value on homes
  • highly trafficked area

Erlene
Erlene I think Collier Heights has some beautiful mid century homes for a reasonable price. Also like the area because of the hills and trees. Area very relaxing. I don't see any way that Collier Heights can go but up with all the people that live in the city and like to have quick access to the interstate. Beautiful homes and good schools. Also I believe it has nice parks. It really surprises me that a flood of people are not moving to that area.
