"Start Enjoying You Weekends"
On our families last visit we stayed in this general area of San Francisco. Not only did we get a lower than normal rate we could find what we needed in a hotel at the last minute. Contrary to popular belief this area is very centrally located with easy access to public transportation, shops and resturants. In addition it is QUIET on the weekends. An added bonus.

"Secret haven in the Financial District"
Super-convenient:
-In the Financial District (zero commute)
-Secret Safeway
-Lots of good restaurants and bars (thank you, Financial District)
-Public transit
-Ferry Terminal Building
-The only outdoor swimming pool (heated) in the city
However, there isn't much of a "neighborhood" feel, and the area gets very quiet on the weekends (however, the coffee shops and restaurants do stay open)
There isn't a lot of residential housing around, but the apartments and townhouses are pretty decent. Golden Gateway Apartments' rent is less than SOMA apartments and there are some amazing views of the Bay
