"Mostly an airport with a few apartments and condos thrown in"

DIA is short for Denver International Airport. The airport itself is a large area and made up of mostly runways, parking lots, and terminals. Along Tower Road there are numerous hotels and restaurants, catering to the travelers, but there are also a few apartments and condominiums along here as well. Tower Road can get really backed up with traffic on any given day, but especially during peak travel hours. The housing in this area is lower priced than many other areas of Denver, probably due to it's location and the fact that there is some noise due to the airport.

This area would be good for someone who travels a lot and frequently found themselves at the airport, but for a true neighborhood feel, Reunion to the north is a great location although much more expensive, and Green Valley Ranch to the south is good as well but not as costly as Reunion. There are numerous restaurants and fast food places for eating out, and there is a good sized grocery store (King Soopers) just south on Tower Road.

There are a couple of small parks in the area, but none within the borders of DIA that I'm aware of.
Pros
  • Wide open spaces nearby
  • Some good housing values
Cons
  • Far from downtown/central Denver

Ryan HAHAHAHA That headline cracks me up! You didn't mention anything about all of the conspiracy theories surrounding DIA and all of it's very interesting, if not creepy, art :)

Ryan hahaha well that gives me comfort! Thanks! :) I read someplace that the horse actually fell upon and killed it's creator as it was being finished...

"Airport, highways, and plains"

This is not a residential area. DIA, (Denver International Airport) is pretty much the only thing out in this area. There has been some recent residential development in some of the surrounding areas, but the region inside the borders contain mostly roadways and the airport itself. I think there are a few residences along Tower Road, in the southwest corner of this neighborhood, but that's about it.
DIA is actually far from Denver proper. I live in east central Denver, about 10 minutes east of downtown. I usually allow 45 minutes to get to the airport during times of light traffic, and more if it's anywhere close to rush hour. Actually, I-70 carries a lot of traffic most of the time. So this area isn't actually thought of as a Denver neighborhood--it's really just DIA.
If you want somewhere to live out on the plains, then you might consider this an interesting area to look into. But considering the pace of development, I wouldn't count on the isolation lasting very long.
The few homes out there tend to typify the new suburban-style community. They are inexpensive, beige, cookie-cutter houses with CCR regulations intended to keep them that way. It's hard for me to imagine what about this is appealing to anyone, but if you like that kind of new construction at a distance from the city, then by all means check it out.
Pros
  • Wide open spaces nearby
Cons
  • Far from downtown/central Denver
  • Still in its residential infancy; feels new and raw

"Big Skies, Big Planes, and a Very Big Airport"

The Denver neighborhood known as DIA (Denver International Airport) has, at almost any given point, more travelers than residents within its bounds. Opened in 1994, the Denver International Airport is, by land area, the largest in the United States.

Denver residents, when asked where the airport is located, might say “Kansas.” They are only slightly kidding. While DIA is still technically in the City and County of Denver, it’s a long haul from the main residential neighborhoods of Denver and from downtown. Driving out to DIA from closer-in neighborhoods – and all of the other neighborhoods are closer-in – may put you in mind of the times when settlers crossed the plains in Conestoga wagons. It’s not unusual to hit a tumbleweed rolling across Pena Boulevard or I-70 in this area.

While there is some residential growth in this area, and developers are trying hard to make housing appeal to residents, it still feels somewhat raw and faraway. Perhaps some of that is the harsh (yet exquisite, in its own way) landscape of the eastern Colorado plains. And some of that is the fact that anyone who tries to commute downtown or to the tech center will be facing an arduous day of driving. The tradeoff: there are some bargain prices on roomy newer homes. The area is still being developed, so it may, at some point, take on more of a community feel.

  • Some good housing values
  • Wide open spaces nearby
Cons
  • Far from downtown/central Denver
  • Still in its residential infancy; feels new and raw
