"Busy, industrial & noisy"
George St is right off Broadway and a 5 minute walk from Sullivan Square T station. and is near an entrance to 93 north.
Along with the usual multi-family residences. where owning a crappy car with a powerful sound-system that makes the houses shake when played is the norm; there is an ironworks that bangs, clangs and grinds Mon-Sat from about 7am to 5pm and often much later during the summer hours.
Street lights are often out or are those annoying sodium bulbs that keep shutting themselves off.
At the end of the street is Taco Loco, a small Mexican restaurant which seems to be popular with local Brazillians, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans. Their customers constantly block the entrance to (as well as park illegally on) George St as well as blast heavy bass 'music' at all hours and usually trash from there as well as broken glass beer bottles litter the sidewalks.
Police & (especially) traffic cops NEVER isue tickets unless a car has been sitting on the street illegally for at least a week or it happens to be a week which street cleaning occurs. People constantly park in fire lanes and handicap spots without a second thought. The traffic cops are idiots and will often just walk by an illegally parked car or truck.
Across the street is Broadway brake, a shop specializing in brakework for large trucks, fire engines, trash trucks, etc so those are often blocking Broadway or are sounding off while backing up and of course the banging and griding that goes along with a usual auto shop.
This usually is open from about 7am to 6pm as well so if you're home be prepared for a lot of noise and you'll have to crank your stereo or TV to hear it.
Also nearby is an exit ramp from 93 south (93 is clearly visible from here) so cars and trucks are constantly speeding down and loudly downshifting which is amplified when bounced off the underside of the 93 overpass. And the honking by drivers on 93 itself is a fixture of the place.
If you are interested in buying from local bodegas then you'll have lots of choices around here because there isn't much else. The only island in this is Vinny's which is a 'superette' by day and a pretty good restaurant by night. The only other non-spanish shops are further down by McGrath highway and include a KFC/Taco Bell, Patsy's bake shop and Stop & Shop.
If you're just moving into the area you might stay for a short while then find something better & fast. It IS convenient commuting from here since you are close to a major bus hub & the Orange Line, but the rents aren't much different from the rest of Somerville or Cambridge for that matter so I would trade a longer walk to a T or bus line for the extra peace. This are is in serious need of gentrification however unless the auto shops move out it simply won't happen anytime soon.
