"I love this street; but, then again, I love this whole neighborhood"
Grove street is one of the prettier streets in the West Village and the West Village is pretty good looking so that's quite an accomplishment. The corner of Bedford and Grove is the building that we see as the exterior for the apartment in the show Friends. It has a restaurant called the Little Owl that is darling and has an amazing brunch. A couple of buildings down on the same side of the street is a restaurant called AOC. It's really quaint and has a lovely garden so all should try it. And, next door to that is where Patricia Highsmith lived (she wrote the Talented Mr. Ripley). Across the street is the Grove Playhouse. It's a really beautiful building wherein John Wilkes Boothe plotted the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Arthur's (57 Grove) is the oldest jazz club in the city (1937). Anyone who is anyone has played at this club. Thomas Paine died at 59 Grove Street and it is now a piano bar named American Crisis in his honor. The corner of 7th Ave and Grove is where Anthony Hintz was shot. He was the hiring boss for Pier 57 and this story is what inspired the very well revered and very boring On the Waterfront.
Christopher Park is on Grove Street and it is lovely. Not much else to say about the park besides that and it was named by the man whom owned this land after himself . . . .like every other thing he owned which I think is pretty funny.
The corner of Waverly and Grove is one of my favorite buildings in NYC: the Northern Dispensary. It has been designated for Public use only in 1831. Edgar Allen Poe was a patient here when it was a clinic for the poor. It was shut down in the '80's when it was a dental clinic for refusing to treat a patient with HIV. It has been vacant nearly since then and it is, apparently, haunted. It is definitely creepy. The street ends after that and I think it's suiting. If I were a street, I wouldn't want to go on after the Dispensary either.
