"Views and Tolls"
Like all the other bridges in the Bay Area, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge has two things: views and one-way toll patterns. Driving eastbound into Richmond, the tolls are non-existant. Driving westbound, you will encounter a $5 toll - nothing earth-shattering, but enough to warrant carrying cash. The bridge is long - although not as long as some of the others - and connects the lovely, upper-class Marin County with the lower-income Richmond and surrounding East Bay.
Views are stunning - although not quite as mind-blowing as the nearby Golden Gate, but it is a great way to save $2 and avoid the GG toll, so long and you are not headed directly into San Francisco. Traffic has never been too bad when I have driven on it, although if you want to avoid congestion, the Westbound toll direction is probably a safer bet than the Eastbound toll-free route.

Pros
- Great views
- No toll en route to Marin
- Nice on the San Rafael side
Cons
- New $5 toll in effect
- Not that safe on the Richmond side

Everything StephSF writes about the Richomond-San Rafael Bridge is true. I would only add that it is a good short cut into Marin if you are trying to make the decision whether to go through SF of not.
