There are endless things to do with children in Locust Valley. One of the things that makes this such a special place to live is all the "open space." If your children love the outdoors, I would take them to explore the Bailey Arboretum, which has a duck pond, walking trails through the woods, a children's habitat and is also home to a bird sanctuary.

Shu Swamp, on Frost Mill Road, is a nature preserve with well-marked trails looping past waterways and over bridges through its tranquil acres. Be sure to bring bread to feed the fish in the pond. Your children will be delighted!

Not to be missed is the 400 Acres of Planting Fields Arboretum. Planting Fields has it all! Open fields, manicured rose gardens, strolling paths, hiking trails through the woods and several greenhouses to explore. The Camilla House is wonderful on a wintery afternoon, as is the Orchid House.

Whichever season you choose to explore these wonderful parks and preserves, you will be impressed by the natural beauty and tranquility and will fully appreciate the unique charm of Locust Valley.
