Today's NY times has a list -"Bright Spots For Year in Thrift"
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/30/dining/30others.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=dining&st=cse
I would like to add a few of my own finds to this list- though you could probably add your favorites too..
1. Mamoun's Falafel (Greenwich Village)
119 MacDougal Street
New York, NY 10012
2. Jaya Malaysian(Chinatown)
Great Nasi Lemak, Laksa and Beef Rendang
90 Baxter Street
New York, NY 10013
3. Moustache Middle Eastern
has 3 outlets but I go the East Village outlet as its bigger than its West Village sibling
265 E 10th Street
(between 1st Avenue & Avenue A)
New York, NY 10009
4. Haandi ( Curry Hill)
Great for Kebabs and Indian biryanis and a favorite with NYC cabbies many of whom are South Asian!
113 Lexington Avenue
(between 27th Street & 28th Street)
New York, NY 10016
5. Pongsri Thai Restaurant( Chinatown)
Super spicy great tasting Thai
106 Bayard Street
(between Baxter Street and Mulberry Street)
New York, NY 10013
The opinions expressed here are those of the individual and not those of StreetAdvisor.

Fried Dumpling on Allen Street can't be beat as far as prices go. I can't count the times I have rounded up whatever change I found in the sofa and headed out to get five dumplings for a dollar. The dumplings are good as far as dumplings go, and the place is pretty well known in the city - I know the reviews greatly vary, but I'd encourage anyone to check it out.

Two Bros pizza on St. Marks!
A slice of pizza is a dollar. 2 slices and a coke is $2.75. That alone is a steal in this city. Best of all, their 1 dollar slice is better than most slices going for $2.50 or more. It's about time someone exposed what a scam all these other pizza joints are running. Not many options with toppings, and the space is small and somtimes crowded - but i have always managed to find a place to sit, eat, and bounce. It's a slice of Pizza. It's a dollar. And, it's actually really good!
It closes at 3am for all you who get the late night munchies!

@uptowngirl How packed does Pongsri Thai Restaurant get? I always want to dine in Chinatown, but just the thought of the crowds down there usually manages to keep me away.

Anyone got a favorite cheap Pho place, preferably lower Manhattan? I have been going into china town to find Pho, but all I have come across is Noodle places, (duh). They are great, but I need a Pho fix every now and again ya know?

@BroadwayBK Honestly I have only eaten at Pongsri at lunch time and even though it gets pretty packed at lunch we've always managed to find a table for the restaurant is quite big. Actually I have never had to wait at Jaya / Pongsri for more than a few minutes at any time lunch / dinner.

As a college kid who's always looking for late-night snacks Koronet’s Pizza. A slice the size of a footbal player's forearm is about $3.50. Plus what's not to love about Morningside Heights?

@bellacaroline Yeah that Koronet's kept me fed as a student too...Ah, the days. I remember the dripping oil on those things with great fondness...

@bellaccaroline I do like Morningside Heights as a neighborhood it does have character and some good restaurants and stores like Community Food and Juice and Bank Street Books.

I am a fan of that banh mi place on Bedford btwn N7th and 8th - the one so aptly called Banh Mi. Decent meatball sandwich, with perfectly toasted bread... I am picky about how my bread is toasted.

I love the Strawberry Daquiris (non alcoholic) at Papaya King. They are excellent and very filling! Also pretzels...

@uptowngirl Chimi Trucks are typically found in the ghetto. Bushwick, East New York, Washington Heights and so on. They sell tons of deliciousness, especially when you visit them after a night of partying. They sell Dominican style burgers and all sorts of empanadas, bacalaitos, and other fried latino cuisine. The good spots will even have arroz con habichuelas.

Super Taco, aka "Sobre Ruedas" at 96th Street and Broadway is a must for anyone who loves tacos, tamales or quesadillas. Definitely try the Al Pastor which is pork and pinapple - a weird combo but works like magic.
