Near South Side, Chicago - good neighborhood for families with kids?

The Near South Side is a decent neighborhood for families with kids. It's safe, and the schools are decent, but there aren't a lot of parks nearby, and it doesn't seem to me to have a real neighborhood spirit. It's kinda cold in some ways. That's not to say it's uninviting, but it isn't the most inviting place either.
